{"id":80668,"date":"2023-06-23T13:29:35","date_gmt":"2023-06-23T10:29:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=80668"},"modified":"2025-09-11T18:20:50","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T15:20:50","slug":"sec-postpones-blockfis-30-million-penalty-payment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/sec-postpones-blockfis-30-million-penalty-payment\/","title":{"rendered":"SEC postpones BlockFi\u2019s $30 million penalty payment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has postponed payment of BlockFi&#8217;s $30 million penalty until all creditor claims against the crypto-lending platform have been fully satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\\\"https:\/\/restructuring.ra.kroll.com\/blockfi\/Home-DocketInfo\\\">court documents<\/a>, the Commission proposed reclassifying the amount due to it as a \u201cgeneral unsecured claim\u201d. The SEC declined priority payment of the penalty in order to \u201cmaximize the distribution to investors and avoid delays\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The agency preserved all rights regarding BlockFi\u2019s claims. The remaining amount of $50 million, which the SEC was entitled to as a result of settling <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bloomberg-sec-opens-investigation-into-blockfi\">claims against the platform<\/a> in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In November BlockFi <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/blockfi-files-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy-protection\">filed for bankruptcy<\/a> in accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/why-crypto-firms-opt-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy-under-the-u-s-bankruptcy-code\">Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code<\/a>. The SEC ended up among the company\u2019s largest creditors. Their number exceeded 100,000 with aggregate claims of more than $1 billion.
