The \u201cGeneration Z protests,\u201d as they were later dubbed, were sparked by a ban on 26 popular social networks, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and YouTube. The army expressed support for the people and is seeking dialogue with protesters to stabilise the situation.<\/p>\n<p>On September 11, around 13:00 local time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Nepal\/\">posts<\/a> on the r\/Nepal subreddit reported easing tensions in Kathmandu and a return to normal life.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Encrypted uprisings<\/h2>\n<p>On the first day of the protests, Nepalis formed a large organised <span data-descr=\"born in the late 1990s\u2014early 2000s\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Generation Z<\/span> <span data-descr=\"an interconnection of devices built on a cellular principle in which workstations connect to one another and can assume the role of a switch for the other participants\" class=\"old_tooltip\">mesh network<\/span>. Cut off from familiar social media amid the clashes, they turned to an alternative channel \u2014 the Bluetooth messenger <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/jack-dorsey-unveils-encrypted-bluetooth-chat\">BitChat<\/a>. A week earlier, only about 3,344 had been recorded.<\/p>\n<p>BitChat is the invention of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, released in July.<\/p>\n<p>The free app, built on <span data-descr=\"an interconnection of devices built on a cellular principle in which workstations connect to one another and can assume the role of a switch for the other participants\" class=\"old_tooltip\">mesh-network<\/span> technology, enables encrypted messaging without internet access, requires no account creation and no phone verification. According to the white paper, BitChat runs over <span data-descr=\"an energy\u2011efficient variant of the Bluetooth wireless technology designed for data exchange between devices at short range\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Bluetooth Low Energy<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Each device acts as a node relaying messages up to 300 metres. One of the messenger\u2019s key features is privacy. <span data-descr=\"'panic mode'\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Panic Mode<\/span> instantly deletes all data after triple-tapping the logo.<\/p>\n<p>According to Google Trends, over the past 30 days worldwide, searches for \u201cbitchat download\u201d show heightened interest in the app on dates close to large-scale protests. On August 25, protests broke out in Jakarta and spread to many cities. Demonstrators demanded the repeal of newly announced high housing-allowance payments for members of parliament and sought higher wages for ordinary citizens.<\/p>\n<p>On September 1, the authorities relented: MPs\u2019 perks and costly foreign trips were scrapped. Six people were killed in the clashes, and the total number of arrests across Indonesia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.antaranews.com\/berita\/5079405\/polri-tangkap-3195-orang-yang-diduga-terlibat-aksi-demo-ricuh\">reached<\/a> 3,195.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cLast week, we noticed a sudden surge in BitChat downloads from Indonesia during nationwide protests. Downloads from the country rose markedly between September 3 and 8, from 7,519 to 8,749.
