{"id":81652,"date":"2023-07-13T13:06:42","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T10:06:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=81652"},"modified":"2025-09-12T00:14:59","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T21:14:59","slug":"cftc-fines-bitcoin-exchange-digitex-15-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/cftc-fines-bitcoin-exchange-digitex-15-million\/","title":{"rendered":"CFTC fines Bitcoin exchange Digitex $15 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. federal court ordered the cryptocurrency exchange Digitex Futures and its CEO Adam Todd <a href=\\\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/8748-23\\\">to pay $15 million<\/a> as a penalty under a suit by the <span data-descr=\\\"U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission\\\" class=\\\"old_tooltip\\\">CFTC<\/span> alleging fraud and unlicensed activity.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>According to the regulator&#8217;s statement, the company sought to manipulate the price of its native token DGTX, illegally offering futures contracts, failed to register with the agency, and did not implement <span data-descr=\\\"Know Your Customer\/Anti-Money Laundering\\\" class=\\\"old_tooltip\\\">KYC\/AML<\/span> procedures.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>According to Ian McGinley, the head of enforcement, Todd allegedly \u201cpumped\u201d the token with a computerised bot.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\\\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\\\"><p>\\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom May through August 2020, Digitex Futures required users to deposit DGTX into their accounts for margin trading on the futures exchange. Throughout the summer, as the exchange prepared to launch, Todd repeatedly attempted, in his own words, to push up the token\u2019s price, as reported by external exchanges,\u201d the official explained.<\/p>\n<p>\\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>The court also ordered a ban on Digitex and related entities.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>The CFTC warned that the payments to victims are unlikely to be fully collected given the violators\u2019 potential lack of funds or assets to satisfy the judgment.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>In April 2023, a court ordered Hydrogen Technology Corp.<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/hydrogen-to-pay-2-8-million-in-sec-case-over-token-price-manipulation\"> a fine of $2.8 million<\/a> under an <span data-descr=\\\"U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission\\\" class=\\\"old_tooltip\\\">SEC<\/span> lawsuit alleging token price manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>\\n\\n\\n<\/p>\n<p>In March, the regulator secured a verdict in favor of charges against John and Jonatina Barksdays over their creation of the fraudulent scheme Ormenus Coin.
