The agency also alleges that the firm knew its clients included sanctioned individuals.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative stemmed from an attack by <span data-descr=\"designated as a terrorist organization by several countries\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Hamas<\/span> on Israel. The politicians believe that the companies allegedly violated sanctions and banking secrecy laws.<\/p>\n<p>According to the document, Tether <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/cftc-orders-bitfinex-and-tether-to-pay-civil-penalties-totaling-42-5-million\">fined<\/a> $41 million for &#8220;false or misleading statements&#8221; about the full backing of the stablecoin USDT.<\/p>\n<p>Hill and Lummis are generally sympathetic toward cryptocurrency, and in their letter said that digital assets and blockchain technology can &#8220;spur responsible innovation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMany crypto-asset intermediaries strive to comply with US sanctions and anti-money-laundering laws, viewing these rules as necessary to unlock the prospects of the technology,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee Sherrod Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2023\/10\/26\/us-senates-banking-chairman-says-panel-to-crack-down-on-cryptos-terrorism-ties\/\">stressed<\/a> that authorities \u201cwill crack down on the use of cryptocurrency to finance terrorism and to evade sanctions\u201d to support Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Brown pledged to close off funding sources for illicit organisations by developing additional oversight measures for the digital-asset industry. He noted his fellow senator Elizabeth Warren, who also spoke out in favor of fighting terrorist financing through cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>Warren, in an earlier speech, cited <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/wsj-palestinian-militants-have-received-at-least-134-million-in-cryptocurrencies\">WSJ material<\/a>, which states that Palestinian militants received at least $134 million in digital assets.<\/p>\n<p>Chainalysis analysts said that when tallying crypto tied to terrorists, many <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/chainalysis-flags-error-in-counting-terrorism-linked-cryptocurrencies\">external funds that passed through various payment services that interacted with criminals<\/a> are incorrectly included in that pool. They also say that financing of illicit activity remains more heavily reliant on traditional methods.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe administration should take additional steps to impose sanctions and devote resources to multilateral coordination with allies to track, freeze, and seize any assets linked to Hamas, and take the steps necessary to deprive terrorists of the ability to raise funds,\u201d Brown added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He also noted that attempts to block crypto-financing of terrorism often become a whack-a-mole game, as law enforcement can stop one transaction while criminals move to another platform.<\/p>\n<p>Coin Metrics co\u2011founder Nick Carter posted a lengthy thread on X, criticizing the US government\u2019s stance on cryptocurrencies.
