{"id":86997,"date":"2023-11-14T12:26:44","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T10:26:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=86997"},"modified":"2025-09-13T09:05:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T06:05:14","slug":"polygon-labs-updates-web3-identity-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/polygon-labs-updates-web3-identity-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Polygon Labs updates Web3 identity service"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Polygon project <a href=\"https:\/\/polygon.technology\/blog\/polygon-id-release-5-boosting-credential-liquidity\">launched<\/a> the fifth version of Polygon ID \u2014 a service for identity in <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-web3\">Web3<\/a> space.<\/p>\n<p>The tool allows <span data-descr=\"decentralized applications\" class=\"old_tooltip\">dapps<\/span> to verify user data without disclosing their personal information.<\/p>\n<p>The service uses <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-zero-knowledge-proof\">zero-knowledge proofs<\/a>, which allow it to authenticate accounts while keeping them encrypted from the verifier.<\/p>\n<p>Polygon ID provides reuse and interoperability of identity data. Once the issuer provides information to the holder, it can be reused indefinitely as long as it remains valid and is not revoked by the issuer.<\/p>\n<p>Identity data can also be shared with other parties in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Verifiable_credentials\"> VC W3C<\/a> standard.<\/p>\n<p>In the fifth version, the number and variety of available credentials increased.<\/p>\n<p>In the update, developers added:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a new<a href=\"https:\/\/devs.polygonid.com\/docs\/issuer\/on-chain-issuer\/on-chain-overview\/\"> on-chain issuer<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>improvements for the issuer nodes;<\/li>\n<li>a new<a href=\"https:\/\/marketplace.polygonid.me\/\"> credentials marketplace<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The functionality is designed to simplify the account-generation process.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New on-chain issuer<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The new on-chain issuer is a smart contract that enables creating credentials in the network. The credentials can pull information from both on-chain and off-chain sources.<\/p>\n<p>Network information sources allow generating an account using public data. For example, credentials confirming token ownership without revealing the address, or information reflecting on-chain reputation calculated based on certain criteria of a person\u2019s history of participation in the network.<\/p>\n<p>When the information source is off-chain, the capabilities expand to creating an account within the network using off-chain information. The client application will take an offline document and convert it into verifiable credentials that will reside in the user\u2019s identity wallet.<\/p>\n<p>The zero-knowledge proof is sent to the network issuer for verification. This opens access to a range of applications, including account generation based on government-issued identity documents obtained from PDF files of official credentials, or credentials confirming that specific information appeared on a webpage at a given moment in time.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Improvements for the issuer node<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Polygon ID team has improved the deployment and usability of the issuer node, adding:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>availability on major cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Marketplace (GCM) and Amazon Web Services (AWS);<\/li>\n<li>the ability to retain on-chain revocation status, a major milestone toward full protocol decentralization;<\/li>\n<li>the ability to use <span data-descr=\"Decentralized Identity \u2014 decentralized identification of an individual\" class=\"old_tooltip\">DID<\/span> with an Ethereum address, enabling the use of<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-the-ethereum-name-service-ens\"> distributed domain name systems<\/a> and leading to more economical state transitions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>New credentials marketplace<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Discovering available credentials and their issuers has long posed a challenge. The marketplace addresses this by simplifying the developer onboarding process, as well as the search for credentials and the structures issuing them.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;We\u2019re not just delivering a product; we\u2019re building an ecosystem. Expanding the set of data available to users is one of the cornerstones of the ecosystem. The other two are solutions and projects that integrate these offerings,&#8221;<\/em> explained Sebastian Rodriguez, Vice President of Products at Polygon Labs for Polygon ID.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Solutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Polygon ID offers:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>for issuers \u2014 issuer node;<\/li>\n<li>for wallet providers \u2014 benefits from a <a href=\"https:\/\/devs.polygonid.com\/docs\/wallet\/wallet-overview\/\">Wallet SDK<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>for dapps developers \u2014 access to a <a href=\"https:\/\/devs.polygonid.com\/docs\/verifier\/verifier-overview\/\">verifier SDK<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>for browser-based applications \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/devs.polygonid.com\/docs\/js-sdk\/js-sdk-overview\/\">JS-SDK<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>for wallets with identity \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/devs.polygonid.com\/docs\/wallet\/wallet-sdk\/polygonid-app\/\"> Polygon ID Wallet<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The presented set of libraries, tools and ready-made apps includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/schema-builder.polygonid.me\/query-builder\"> query builder<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/schema-builder.polygonid.me\/query-builder\"> schema builder<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Polygon launched the Polygon ID service in March 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the European Parliament<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/european-parliament-approves-law-on-eu-wide-digital-identity-wallets\"> adopted a bill<\/a> for a digital identification system. The document envisions a digital wallet for every EU citizen.
