{"id":87679,"date":"2023-11-30T10:01:51","date_gmt":"2023-11-30T08:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=87679"},"modified":"2025-09-13T13:22:42","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T10:22:42","slug":"bitcoin-mixer-sinbad-io-sanctioned-by-the-united-states-after-server-seizures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/bitcoin-mixer-sinbad-io-sanctioned-by-the-united-states-after-server-seizures\/","title":{"rendered":"Bitcoin mixer Sinbad.io sanctioned by the United States after server seizures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On November 29, <span data-descr=\"The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control\" class=\"old_tooltip\">OFAC<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy1933\">added<\/a> the cryptocurrency-mixing service Sinbad.io to the sanctions list for laundering assets belonging to the North Korean Lazarus group.<\/p>\n<p>According to the agency, the mixer processed millions of dollars in cryptocurrency obtained, including as a result of hacker attacks on <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/hacker-steals-about-100-million-in-harmonys-horizon-cross-chain-bridge-attack\">cross-chain bridge Horizon<\/a> of the Harmony protocol, used in the blockchain game Axie Infinity <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ronin-the-ethereum-sidechain-hacked-attacker-siphons-625-million\">Ronin sidechain<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/elliptic-atomic-wallet-hacker-sent-assets-to-mixer-used-by-lazarus-group\">Atomic Wallet<\/a> wallet. The total damage from these three hacks amounted to about $820 million.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Sinbad.io was used to evade sanctions, pay for drugs, procure child sexual abuse material, and other purchases on the dark web.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. authorities say the service provided material and technical support to the North Korean government and also aided cybercriminal activity directed at the United States.<\/p>\n<p>OFAC has blocked any Sinbad.io property within U.S. jurisdiction. Residents and citizens are prohibited from dealing with it. Foreign financial institutions also face sanctions risk for conducting operations in support of Sinbad.io.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ofac.treasury.gov\/recent-actions\/20231129\">Two Bitcoin addresses<\/a> of the mixer are included in the <span data-descr=\"Specially Designated Nationals List\" class=\"old_tooltip\">SDN<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Sinbad.io&#8217;s operation was halted on November 27 after server seizures in the Netherlands and Finland. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Afbeelding2.webp\" alt=\"Afbeelding2\" class=\"wp-image-221174\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data: FIOD.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to <span data-descr=\"The Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service\" class=\"old_tooltip\">FIOD<\/span>, in 2023 alone the mixer laundered at least $178 million in cryptocurrency.
