{"id":88287,"date":"2023-12-15T10:00:05","date_gmt":"2023-12-15T08:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=88287"},"modified":"2025-09-13T17:04:43","modified_gmt":"2025-09-13T14:04:43","slug":"nirvana-finance-hacker-agrees-to-forfeit-12-3-million","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/nirvana-finance-hacker-agrees-to-forfeit-12-3-million\/","title":{"rendered":"Nirvana Finance hacker agrees to forfeit $12.3 million"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The hacker responsible for the breach of Nirvana Finance&#8217;s yield-farming protocol and an unnamed <span data-descr=\"decentralized exchange\" class=\"old_tooltip\">DEX<\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/pr\/former-security-engineer-international-technology-company-pleads-guilty-hacking-two\">pleaded guilty<\/a> and agreed to forfeit the stolen assets worth $12.3 million.<\/p>\n<p>According to U.S. prosecutors, in the summer of 2022, 34-year-old senior security engineer Shakib Ahmed exploited a vulnerability in the smart contract of an unnamed exchange. A few weeks later he <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/hackers-attacked-the-nirvana-defi-project-the-nirv-stablecoin-lost-parity-with-the-dollar\">attacked Nirvana Finance<\/a> using a flash loan and moved $3.49 million in cryptocurrency from the project&#8217;s treasury.<\/p>\n<p>Although the protocol&#8217;s developers offered the hacker a bounty, the parties failed to reach an agreement. The stolen funds were converted into Monero and passed through the Samourai Whirlpool mixer.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Ahmed was charged with electronic fraud and money laundering.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to confiscating the stolen cryptocurrency, he was ordered to pay victims $5 million in compensation.<\/p>\n<p>The final sentence in the case is due on March 13; Ahmed faces up to five years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>As reported, part of the funds stolen from Nirvana Finance moved through the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/thorswap-restricts-operations-amid-influx-of-illicit-funds\">decentralized exchange THORSwap<\/a>.
