The OTC-traded vehicle is the largest holder of the primary cryptocurrency. By comparison, the actively <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/microstrategy-buys-more-bitcoin-for-593-3-million\">building up reserves<\/a> in digital gold company MicroStrategy led by Michael Saylor trails by more than a threefold, owning 174 530 BTC.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2021, Grayscale Investments <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/dcg-chief-confirms-plans-to-convert-grayscales-bitcoin-trust-into-an-etf\">filed for conversion<\/a> of the Bitcoin Trust into a spot ETF. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) repeatedly <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/sec-delays-ruling-on-grayscales-bid-to-launch-a-spot-bitcoin-etf\">delayed a decision<\/a> on the application and ultimately rejected it in June 2022.<\/p>\n<p>As CEO Michael Sonnenshein had promised, Grayscale <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/grayscale-sues-sec-over-refusal-to-convert-gbtc-into-an-etf\">filed a lawsuit<\/a> against the regulator. In August 2023, the court <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-price-surpasses-27500-after-court-ruling-in-grayscales-favour\">granted the motion<\/a> of the company, obliging the SEC to reconsider the denial of the product registration.<\/p>\n<p>As of this writing, Grayscale awaits the Commission&#8217;s decision, as do other <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/sec-takes-up-review-of-spot-bitcoin-etf-applications\">applicants<\/a> to launch spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. such as BlackRock, VanEck, Invesco, Fidelity Investments and WisdomTree.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In recent months a number of firms have <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/sec-weighs-spot-bitcoin-etf-launches-with-several-issuers\">engaged in active consultations<\/a> with the regulator and amended documents to meet the proposed requirements. According to media reports, the SEC <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/media-reports-on-the-sec-deadline-for-bitcoin-etf-applications\">set<\/a> the deadline for submitting final proposals on December 29.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Industry experts <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/analyst-sec-set-to-broadly-approve-bitcoin-etf-filings-in-january\">anticipate<\/a> that the agency will broadly approve products around January 8-10.<\/p>\n<p>Poorly regulated, the United States has since October 2021 traded only Bitcoin futures ETFs, while regulators in other countries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/canada-registers-bitcoin-etf-ahead-of-the-united-states\">Canada<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/brazil-becomes-the-second-country-in-the-world-to-approve-a-bitcoin-etf\">Brazil<\/a> opened the door to spot products long ago.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Investors Prefer Derivatives<\/h2>\n<p>As of December 22, bitcoin-only ETFs held a total of 144,222 BTC. Multicurrency ETFs accounted for 26,156 BTC.<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen spot funds in the ranking held 38.5% of total assets, while only six futures-based funds accounted for 61.6%.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u00abThis may indicate that traditional financial institutions are leaning toward derivatives for investing in Bitcoin, rather than the cryptocurrency itself,\u00bb CoinGecko experts suggested.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The leading ETF is the futures-based Bitcoin Tracker One from the European provider XBT, with total assets of $7.11 billion. The product launched in Sweden in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In second place is the similar Bitcoin Strategy ETF from the American firm ProShares \u2014 $1.64 billion.
