Each has a trough and a smartphone displaying a feed of vertical videos. The CEO of OpenAI looks directly into the camera and asks:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAre my piglets happy with their slop?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In another clip, AI-Altman claims the content may violate third-party image usage rules, then laughs hysterically. The app is filled with content where \u201cPikachu\u201d whispers <span data-descr=\"Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response \u2014 a soft tingling or 'goosebumps' that begins on the scalp or neck and can spread through the body. It occurs in some people in response to certain sounds or visual stimuli\" class=\"old_tooltip\">ASMR<\/span>, \u201cNaruto\u201d orders Krabby Patties, and \u201cMario\u201d smokes weed.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI has refined the physics in the new AI video generator Sora 2, which underpins the app. Videos now appear more realistic, but this also facilitates the spread of misinformation online.<\/p>\n<p>Besides the algorithmic feed and profiles, a key feature of Sora is the cameo tool. It allows users to upload personal data and use it to create videos.<\/p>\n<p>Users can decide who is allowed to make videos with their cameo. There are four options: \u201conly me,\u201d \u201cpeople I approve,\u201d \u201cmutual followers,\u201d and \u201ceveryone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Altman made his cameo available to everyone. As a result, Sora&#8217;s feed is filled with videos where \u201cPikachu\u201d and \u201cSpongeBob\u201d ask the entrepreneur to stop training AI on their images.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-9-16 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Spongebob, Pikachu generated in OpenAI's Sora app\" width=\"422\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TJPXTEg-PgM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Ethics of Launching<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Several current and former OpenAI employees have commented on the company&#8217;s first foray into social media.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAI-based feeds are scary. I won&#8217;t deny that I felt some concern when I first learned we were releasing Sora 2. However, I think the team did everything possible to create a positive experience. We will strive to ensure AI helps rather than harms humanity,\u201d wrote John Hallman, a company employee involved in pre-training models.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">AI-based feeds are scary. Compared to other platforms, I find myself scrolling way\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uLeeVMKncl\">https:\/\/t.co\/uLeeVMKncl<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 John Hallman (@johnohallman) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/johnohallman\/status\/1973087585263116654?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 30, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>He called Sora 2 \u201can astonishingly incredible technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI would be equally sad if we never released it due to fears that something might go wrong,\u201d the expert added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Another OpenAI researcher and Harvard professor, Boaz Barak, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/boazbaraktcs\/status\/1973191606137221228\">experienced<\/a> \u201cthe same mix of anxiety and excitement.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTechnically, Sora 2 is amazing, but it&#8217;s too early to congratulate ourselves on avoiding the pitfalls of other social networks and deepfakes,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Among the positives, he highlighted the noticeable watermark on export, the ability to use only real people through uploaded cameos, and control over how a person&#8217;s identity is used.<\/p>\n<p>Altman was <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TUXHXR_X\/status\/1973378032111931459\">criticised<\/a> for developing a social app with deepfakes instead of general artificial intelligence (AGI). He <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sama\/status\/1973381552621887706\">explained<\/a> why this is necessary:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c[\u2026] We mainly need capital to build AI capable of doing science, and of course, almost all our research efforts are focused on creating AGI. Meanwhile, it&#8217;s nice to show people cool new technologies and products along the way, make them smile, and hopefully make money \u2014 given all the computing resource needs. When we launched ChatGPT, there were many questions like &#8216;who needs this and where is AGI&#8217; [\u2026]\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a June podcast, Altman spoke about \u201cthe great mismatch of social networks\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOne of the big mistakes of the social media era is that feed algorithms had a lot of unintended negative consequences for both society as a whole and individual users.
