I\u2019ve been mulling over how XRP is used in DeFi (both organically with apps and protocols like Flare,\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XhufcyBzkA\">https:\/\/t.co\/XhufcyBzkA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 David &#8216;JoelKatz&#8217; Schwartz (@JoelKatz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoelKatz\/status\/1990846545307283760?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 18, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The lead developer of the XRP Ledger (XRPL) noted that the initiative emerged from reflections on enhancing the utility of the Ripple token through new capabilities.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;All this made David and me think: what if we ever implemented support for native staking on XRPL? What would it look like?&#8221; Akinyele wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The specialist noted that the Ripple network was initially designed for fast and efficient on-chain value transfer, making its architecture significantly different from blockchains using the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/proof-of-stake-how-it-works-and-why-it-is-so-popular\">Proof-of-Stake<\/a> (PoS) algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>According to Akinyele, implementing staking requires:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a source of rewards;<\/li>\n<li>a mechanism for their fair distribution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Addressing these issues will require restructuring XRPL at a fundamental level, the specialist believes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Distant Prospect<\/h2>\n<p>Currently, transaction fees in the network are burned to maintain token supply deflation. A pool to incentivize stakers could be formed from new fees associated with programming functions, Akinyele suggested.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Distribution also requires careful design. Staking changes the interaction of validators and participants, introducing financial incentives that can enhance interaction but also subtly alter governance dynamics,&#8221; the developer added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One of the XRPL validators <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Vet_X0\/status\/1990851207988908507\">compared<\/a> PoS staking to a lottery determining the next block producer. He expressed doubts that a network based on the Proof-of-Association algorithm would &#8220;fit&#8221; into such processes. XRPL node operators work without financial incentives, do not compete for block inclusion, and the blockchain lacks a slashing mechanism\u2014penalties for misconduct.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;There are two ideas. Both are technically excellent, but unlikely to be implemented in practice, at least in the near future,&#8221; Schwartz replied.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>One option he mentioned is transitioning to a two-tier consensus model. Only an inner circle of 16 validators, chosen by the outer layer, would use staking\/slashing.<\/p>\n<p>Another path is to maintain the existing consensus but use transaction fees to pay for <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-zero-knowledge-proof\">zero-knowledge proofs<\/a> of correct smart contract execution by nodes. This would relieve nodes from the need to perform complex energy-intensive computations.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Ripple Moving Towards DeFi?<\/h2>\n<p>Schwartz noted that implementing the initiative alongside smart contract integration aims to enhance the capabilities of Ripple&#8217;s distributed ledger in the DeFi sector.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;XRPL was created in 2012. Since then, the blockchain world has changed many times,&#8221; he emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In October, Schwartz announced he would <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/david-schwartz-to-step-down-as-ripples-cto\">step down<\/a> as the company&#8217;s CTO by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse also urged the community to share ideas regarding the network&#8217;s potential in decentralized finance and the integration of other applications for XRP.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">With new DeFi protocols and apps emerging for XRP, what other possibilities for the network should be discussed?
