{"id":91543,"date":"2025-11-28T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=91543"},"modified":"2025-12-04T06:43:02","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T03:43:02","slug":"how-likely-is-a-new-bitcoin-hard-fork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/how-likely-is-a-new-bitcoin-hard-fork\/","title":{"rendered":"Is a New Bitcoin Hard Fork Really Possible?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since April 2025 a <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/the-op_return-war-intensifies-within-the-bitcoin-community\">conflict<\/a> among Bitcoin developers has <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/core-vs-knots-the-83-byte-row-that-split-the-bitcoin-community\">split<\/a> the community into two camps. One backs the alternative Knots client, which takes a hard line on protecting mining decentralisation and fighting spam on the blockchain of the first cryptocurrency. The other trusts Bitcoin Core and believes the network is heading in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions escalated after the ambiguous <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-core-developers-release-controversial-update\">release<\/a> of v30, which removed the limit on relaying data within a block. In November an unprecedented 21% of nodes backed the \u201cfilterers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Constant skirmishes on social media spawned rumours of a possible soft\u2014or even <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-hard-fork\">hard fork<\/a>\u2014of Bitcoin. The last time the question felt this acute was in 2015\u20132017, during the \u201cblocksize war\u201d, which ultimately produced the separate Bitcoin Cash chain.<\/p>\n<p>ForkLog has examined the arguments on both sides to assess how realistic a new fork of the first cryptocurrency might be.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A tireless sentinel<\/h2>\n<p>Luke Dashjr, the head of the Knots team, is known as one of the fiercest critics of Bitcoin Core. He began his campaign to safeguard Bitcoin\u2019s values in 2019, when at the Magical Crypto Conference he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CqNEQS80-h4&#038;t=332s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">warned<\/a> the community about the problems that could arise if block sizes were allowed to grow unchecked.<\/p>\n<p>Dashjr has often used the dramatic phrase \u201can attack on Bitcoin\u201d. He has pointed directly to centralisation of decision-making and alleged disregard for community consensus. In 2021 his criticism focused on disagreements over node synchronisation during the upgrade to software supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-taproot\">Taproot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Community came to consensus on BIP8.<\/p>\n<p>These devs are IGNORING that and pushing their own agenda instead.<\/p>\n<p>It is an attack on Bitcoin, not a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Luke Dashjr (@LukeDashjr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LukeDashjr\/status\/1382528134910767104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 15, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>His criticism intensified in 2023 as \u201cinscriptions\u201d took off, laying the groundwork for the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-are-ordinals-and-brc-20-tokens\">Ordinals<\/a> protocol. The sticking point <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-core-developer-luke-dashjr-the-younger-criticised-ordinals-for-network-spam\">became<\/a> what he saw as non-purpose use of Bitcoin and the risk of \u201ccluttering\u201d it with <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-are-nfts\">NFT<\/a> spam. The community in turn accused him of trying to censor the blockchain.<\/p>\n<p>Dashjr was also for a long time the sole editor of Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIPs), a role he earned thanks to his large contribution to building the ecosystem of the first cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>However, in April 2024, at the initiative of Bitcoin Core lead developer Ava Chow, a replacement from a group of contributors was proposed. According to her, the responsibility and workload were too great to rest on one person\u2019s shoulders.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cOne of the big frustrations was that Luke would leave a comment like: \u2018Hey, you need to fix this thing,\u2019 and the author would literally fix it within a few hours. But then we wouldn\u2019t see Luke again on that Pull Request for another month or two,\u201d<\/em> \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/consensus-magazine\/2024\/04\/23\/will-bitcoins-new-bip-editors-streamline-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">explained<\/a> Chow in 2023.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Her remarks suggested strained relations within the team, and that Dashjr\u2019s criticism was likely slowing the implementation of complex smart contracts and the development of, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-layer%e2%80%912-solution-in-blockchain\">L2<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/btcfi-stalled-evolution-or-a-temporary-setback\">BTCFi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, in 2023, responding to Jeremy Rubin\u2019s proposal to use <span data-descr=\"conditions or constraints that ensure certain rules are enforced when interacting with the assets or functions described in a contract\" class=\"old_tooltip\">covenants<\/span> to create programmable transactions Check Template Verify (CTV), he again declared a deliberate threat to the digital-gold network.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"227\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-3eced1843d6fdd86-10729488808064789-1024x227.png\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-270720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-3eced1843d6fdd86-10729488808064789-1024x227.png 1024w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-3eced1843d6fdd86-10729488808064789-300x66.png 300w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-3eced1843d6fdd86-10729488808064789-768x170.png 768w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-3eced1843d6fdd86-10729488808064789.png 1089w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/gnusha.org\/pi\/bitcoindev\/2e113332-2cfd-73ec-0368-136728ceb31a%40dashjr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">gnusha.org<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a countermeasure, Dashjr proposed responding with a <span data-descr=\"User-Requested Soft Fork\" class=\"old_tooltip\">user-requested soft fork<\/span>, under which nodes could publicly reject blocks that support CTV.<\/p>\n<p>The temperature rose again in spring 2025, when discussion began on increasing the data-relay limit in <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-op_return-and-how-does-it-enable-data-storage-on-the-bitcoin-network\">OP_RETURN<\/a> outputs from 80 to 100,000 bytes.<\/p>\n<p>On 27 April Peter Todd <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/bitcoin\/bitcoin\/pull\/32359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">submitted<\/a> Pull Request (PR) #32359 to Bitcoin Core. The proposal scrapped all limits on OP_RETURN output sizes and formalised an initiative by Antoine Poinsot of Chaincode Labs.<\/p>\n<p>Both programmers saw little point in limits, arguing that users had long found many workarounds. And constraints were hampering the development of new functionality in the first cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>Although Todd\u2019s proposal was closed on 12 May, it made its way into the October Bitcoin Core v30 release.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Knots at the ready<\/h2>\n<p>In response, Dashjr urged preserving the limits and either staying on older Core versions or switching to his Bitcoin Knots client, which enforces a strict OP_RETURN cap of 42 bytes.<\/p>\n<p>Knots, like other forks of the main software, does not violate consensus rules and remains fully compatible with today\u2019s Bitcoin network. Such forks adapt the code to developers\u2019 views and preferred use-cases for the first cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-keypoints article_keypoints\">\n<p>Bitcoin Knots, previously known as Bitcoin LJR, was launched by Dashjr in 2011. He likely borrowed the name from the biblical episode in which Jesus Christ chased merchants from the temple with a whip of knots (a shepherd\u2019s scourge). This theory was <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinmagazine.com\/technical\/bitcoin-rbf-bitcoin-knots-and-bitcoin-addrindex-three-core-forks-that-don-t-break-with-consensus-1458237046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">put forward<\/a> by Bitcoin Magazine\u2019s editor-in-chief, Aaron van Wirdum. Dashjr often introduced optimisations that later landed in Core. Since 2011 the target audience for the custom code has broadened and the rules have become more conservative. Only improvements deemed \u201csafe enough\u201d make the cut.<\/p>\n<p>Knots offers more options for node operators and miners. They get a host of extra settings for censoring transactions and combating spam.<\/p>\n<p>The burgeoning confrontation has not helped Core. In May Knots-powered nodes were around 10%; at the time of writing, their share has <a href=\"https:\/\/coin.dance\/nodes\/share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">exceeded<\/a> 21% and continues to grow.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-0ff909a2bd10059a-10729489089428910.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-270723\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: Coin Dance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Activity by individual programmers has also tilted the scales further towards Knots.<\/p>\n<p>In late October a Bitcoin developer under the nickname dathonohm <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/new-proposal-to-limit-blockchain-data-divides-bitcoin-community\">proposed<\/a> BIP-444, which would temporarily restrict the ability to add arbitrary data to the blockchain to reduce the risk of illegal content. Implementing it would trigger a soft fork, making previously valid transactions invalid for one year.<\/p>\n<p>Dashjr supported the initiative as a temporary measure, saying it \u201caligns with the strategic course and has no technical obstacles\u201d. The cypherpunk Nick Szabo, whose work helped inspire Bitcoin, also sided with Knots.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The transactions have gone from L1 to the L2s, because of the success of the L2s, which haven&#8217;t needed legible-sized data buckets on L1 to be so remarkably successful.  <\/p>\n<p>To people putting legible data on Bitcoin, and to those who have lobbied for legible-sized buckets in which\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Nick Szabo (@NickSzabo4) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NickSzabo4\/status\/1993124746645647360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 25, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The split persisted: many participants still saw no point in the \u201cimprovements\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Underhand tactics or necessary measures?<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond curbing uncontrolled spam, Knots supporters raised the spectre of illegal and otherwise sensitive content that could be embedded forever in the blockchain, exposing archival node operators to risk. On social media, fears coalesced around the possible inclusion of undeletable <span data-descr=\"child sexual abuse materials \u2014 materials containing depictions of sexual violence against minors\" class=\"old_tooltip\">CSAM<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>On 6 October Dashjr <a href=\"https:\/\/en.bitcoinsistemi.com\/bitcoin-developer-claims-theyre-attacking-btc-right-now-made-a-very-marginal-proposal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">accused<\/a> the largest mining pool, F2Pool, of actively attacking the Bitcoin network and urged the community to act. The allegation centred on the intentional spread of CSAM on Bitcoin to tarnish its reputation.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cIf miners are in a malicious pool\u2014change pool, switch to Foundry or Antpool or even mine your own blocks, because if content like CSAM gets into the network, the consequences will be irreversible,\u201d<\/em> said Dashjr.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In his view, the only way out was a soft fork.<\/p>\n<p>Core supporters on social media <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Beautyon_\/status\/1977082558358716766\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">argued<\/a> that even if such content does not exist, publicising it would all but ensure it appears.<\/p>\n<p>Another lever for Knots is the Ocean mining pool, where Dashjr is CTO and co-founder alongside Twitter\u2019s creator Jack Dorsey. The platform <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ocean-a-decentralised-bitcoin-pool-clarifies-its-position-on-ordinals\">incentivises<\/a> miners to ignore non-financial transactions by charging fees.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his involvement with Knots, Dorsey appears neutral. Evidence includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/1a1z.com\/files\/1A1z%20-%20Funding%20Bitcoin%20-%20Part%201.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">report<\/a> by the research group 1A1z. According to its analysts, through subsidiaries he supports most Bitcoin developers. Source: 1A1z.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At Brink\u2019s instigation, from May to September Core <a href=\"https:\/\/ostif.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/25-05-2133-REP-bitcoincore-security-assessment-V1.3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">underwent<\/a> its first independent technical audit. Analysts from Quarklab and the Open Source Technology Improvement Fund were assisted by Bitcoin developer Niklas G\u00f6gge and Antoine Poinsot, the proponent of higher OP_RETURN limits.<\/p>\n<p>The findings bolstered the team\u2019s standing at a difficult time. The report concluded that improvements in recent years to security policy, testing and the review process have indeed enhanced the reliability and quality of Bitcoin Core.<\/p>\n<p>How else to turn up the heat in crypto circles? An answer appeared in late September with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.therage.co\/leaked-luke-dashjr-bitcoin-hardfork\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">article<\/a> by an independent journalist under the pseudonym L0la L33tz. It included screenshots of leaked messages showing Dashjr purportedly planning a hard fork of the Bitcoin network.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-keypoints article_keypoints\">\n<p>It is important to understand that changing the OP_RETURN limit is a client policy change, not a change to consensus rules. A hard fork in this case is therefore virtually excluded.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the correspondence, Dashjr calls mempool filtering insufficient to prevent CSAM being stored on-chain. Instead, he proposes creating a committee with a <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-multisignature-what-is-a-ring-signature\">multisig<\/a> and empowering it to retroactively alter data on the network.<\/p>\n<p>Under the idea, a trusted group would verify transactions and replace CSAM data with a zero-knowledge proof (<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-zero-knowledge-proof\">ZKP<\/a>). On advice from Ocean\u2019s lawyer, the Knots team decided that \u201cit\u2019s better if the letter is not perceived as coming from them\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cAre you writing an article that is entirely based on lies?\u201d<\/em> \u2014 asked Dashjr in a comment to The Rage, refusing further dialogue.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If such a committee could delete CSAM, it could also censor any other data it deems undesirable, L0la L33tz\u2019s article argued.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Logical knots<\/h2>\n<p>Rumours of a hard fork became the emotional peak of the conflict. Dashjr\u2019s opponents felt vindicated in their fears.
