He suggested the next economic recession could be triggered by a crash in highly speculative digital assets with unlimited supply.<\/p>\n<p>Most of them, he said, lack fundamental value and \u201ctrack nothing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the strategist noted bitcoin\u2019s relative resilience: as of December 14 the decline in its price was only about 5%.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bitcoin correction to $25,240<\/h2>\n<p>Veteran trader and technical analyst Peter Brandt warned of a risk of a deep drop in bitcoin\u2019s price, citing a break in the asset\u2019s parabolic advance.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Bitcoin investors, do you know:<\/p>\n<p>1. Breaking such a trajectory has previously led to drawdowns of more than 80%.<\/p>\n<p>By Brandt\u2019s calculations, if that pattern repeats and prices drop 80% from the peak, the \u201cdigital gold\u201d could fall to $25,240.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, Presto Research analyst Rick Maeda told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theblock.co\/post\/382639\/bitcoin-slides-below-86000\">The Block<\/a> he sees little reason for a capitulation. The sell-off coincided with the US stock market open, he noted, as the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq started lower and dragged risk assets with them.<\/p>\n<p>Maeda added that thin year-end liquidity is magnifying moves, especially during US trading hours.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flight from risk<\/h2>\n<p>Kronos Research CIO Vincent Liu said a sharp risk-off shift amid macroeconomic uncertainty sparked the slump.<\/p>\n<p>Low liquidity, he noted, turned local dips into a broad slide. Traders rotated into perceived safe assets.<\/p>\n<p>In Liu\u2019s view, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/federal-reserve-cuts-interest-rate-for-third-consecutive-time\">the Fed\u2019s rate cut<\/a> has barely altered cautious market expectations. Two factors made matters worse: widespread closing of leveraged positions and the seasonal year-end liquidity squeeze. He estimates at least 400,000 devices were switched off.<\/p>\n<p>In late November the People\u2019s Bank of China <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/china-reaffirms-cryptocurrencys-illegal-status\">pledged<\/a> to \u201cstrictly crack down on illegal activity\u201d in the crypto sector.<\/p>\n<p>Presto research fellow Min Zhong explained that in recent months China\u2019s share of mining quietly recovered to 15% thanks to cheap electricity and spare data-centre capacity. The regulator\u2019s swift response exposed the fragility of that rebound.<\/p>\n<p>Zhong also stressed there is no direct evidence of mass bitcoin selling by miners in Xinjiang.<\/p>\n<p>Liu allowed for short-term price pressure from a drop in computing power.
