{"id":92330,"date":"2025-12-17T17:56:48","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T14:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=92330"},"modified":"2025-12-17T18:00:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T15:00:35","slug":"solana-tests-quantum-resistant-transactions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/solana-tests-quantum-resistant-transactions\/","title":{"rendered":"Solana Tests Quantum-Resistant Transactions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-solana-sol\">Solana<\/a> Foundation has partnered with Project Eleven to prepare its network for potential threats posed by <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/quantum-computers-who-will-bask-in-the-glow-of-the-analogue-digital-chandelier\">quantum computers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Quantum computers aren&#8217;t here yet, but Solana Foundation is preparing for the possibility.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, we&#8217;ve consulted with Project Eleven to assess our quantum readiness.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re pleased to announce a first step, the deployment of post-quantum signatures on a Solana testnet. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nnN8qCpq3m\">https:\/\/t.co\/nnN8qCpq3m<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Solana Foundation (@SolanaFndn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SolanaFndn\/status\/2000948477568934084?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 16, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Experts assessed the risks for Solana and developed a testnet prototype using post-quantum digital signatures.<\/p>\n<p>The implementation demonstrated that &#8220;end-to-end quantum-resistant transactions are practical and scalable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Our responsibility is to ensure the blockchain&#8217;s security not only today but for decades to come. Solana&#8217;s ecosystem culture of rapid innovation will continue with the release of a second client and an advanced consensus mechanism this year,&#8221; said Matt Sorg, Vice President of Technology at Solana Foundation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>It remains unknown which specific post-quantum encryption standard the Project Eleven test network employs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Does Solana Need for Protection?<\/h2>\n<p>In early December, analysts from Helius Labs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.helius.dev\/blog\/solana-post-quantum-cryptography\">presented<\/a> a plan for Solana&#8217;s transition to post-quantum cryptography. According to them, the blockchain requires a &#8220;deep transformation of the protocol&#8217;s core.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The primary threat comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%90%D0%BB%D0%B3%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%BC_%D0%A8%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B0\">Shor&#8217;s algorithm<\/a>, which theoretically allows the current elliptic curve encryption standard (Ed25519) to be cracked.<\/p>\n<p>The first change will be the complete abandonment of Ed25519 as the base digital signature algorithm in all network components. Instead, post-quantum alternatives like the standardized <span data-descr=\"National Institute of Standards and Technology\" class=\"old_tooltip\">NIST<\/span> algorithm ML-DSA will need to be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>This will result in a significant increase in data volumes: the public key size will grow from 32 bytes to 1-2 KB, and the digital signature from 64 bytes to several kilobytes.<\/p>\n<p>The second step involves a complete redesign of address and transaction formats. The current system, where the address is a 32-byte Ed25519 public key, cannot accommodate post-quantum keys. Therefore, the address will become their shortened digital fingerprint (hash).<\/p>\n<p>The transition is planned to be smooth: the new protocol version will operate alongside the current one. However, the update will affect all system levels\u2014from user wallets to validator authorization mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p>Challenges may arise with the network&#8217;s operation. Key components like the Votor consensus mechanism and the Rotor data transmission system currently rely on compact signatures. In a post-quantum world, their efficiency will be at risk.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, Votor will lose the ability to quickly aggregate thousands of validator votes, and Rotor will be unable to sign each small block fragment due to the excessive size of new signatures.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Solana does not need an immediate transition to post-quantum cryptography. [&#8230;] Estimates for the emergence of practical quantum computers range from &#8216;a few years&#8217; to &#8216;never.&#8217; [&#8230;] However, if migration eventually becomes necessary, the path is conceptually clear.
