{"id":92458,"date":"2025-12-21T17:19:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T14:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=92458"},"modified":"2025-12-22T10:55:37","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T07:55:37","slug":"the-week-in-crypto-solana-hit-by-ddos-bitcoins-hashrate-plunges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/the-week-in-crypto-solana-hit-by-ddos-bitcoins-hashrate-plunges\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Wrap-Up: Solana DDoS Attack and Bitcoin&#8217;s Mysterious Hashrate Plunge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bitcoin swung on a drop in US inflation and a rate rise in Japan; Solana endured a major <span data-descr=\"a \u2018denial-of-service\u2019 type attack that overloads a server, site or network with huge volumes of bogus requests from many devices\" class=\"old_tooltip\">DDoS<\/span> attack; the Ethereum team outlined details of a new upgrade; and other events of the week.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">US inflation and Japan\u2019s rate<\/h2>\n<p>Over the past seven days bitcoin fully surrendered the momentum gained after the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/federal-reserve-cuts-interest-rate-for-third-consecutive-time\">rate cut<\/a> by the <span data-descr=\"US Federal Reserve\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Fed<\/span> on 10 December. It failed and fell back to $85,000.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, 18 December, sentiment was lifted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-inflation-slows-unexpectedly-bitcoin-rises\">the release<\/a> of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI). The gauge decreased by 0.3% and, on an unadjusted annual basis, reached 2.7% (3% in October).<\/p>\n<p>The figures undershot forecasts: analysts had expected 3.1%.<\/p>\n<p>Lower inflation again pushed bitcoin towards $90,000, but not for long. That evening the asset slipped below $85,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On 19 December the digital gold returned to an uptrend on news from the Bank of Japan. The regulator <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-rebounds-to-88000-after-bank-of-japan-lifts-rate-to-a-30-year-high\">announced<\/a> a rise in the benchmark rate to a 30-year high.<\/p>\n<p>The market\u2019s reaction surprised many participants. Most analysts had expected a proportional response by cryptoassets to the negative news from Japan, yet prices rose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even so, the coin ended the week in the red, down roughly 1.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Most top-10 coins by market capitalisation followed bitcoin. Bitcoin\u2019s dominance is 57.3%; Ethereum\u2019s is 11.7%.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A DDoS attack on Solana<\/h2>\n<p>The Solana blockchain <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/solana-endures-one-of-the-largest-ddos-attacks-in-history\">weathered<\/a> the fourth-largest DDoS attack in its history. Attackers tried to overload the network for roughly seven days, but developers managed to <a href=\"https:\/\/solanafloor.com\/ru\/news\/solana-shrugs-off-4th-largest-ddos-attack-history\">repel<\/a> the interference.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-265525cfd34d39dd-1542486893168278.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272204\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SolanaFloor\/status\/2000826352505905249\">X<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Malicious traffic peaked at 6 <span data-descr=\"terabits per second\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Tbps<\/span>. In terms of sheer volume, the incident was on a par with attacks on the infrastructure of <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/google-reveals-details-of-a-previously-unknown-large-scale-ddos-attack\">Google Cloud<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/cloudflare-outage-disrupts-multiple-crypto-services\">Cloudflare<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/aws-outage-disrupts-coinbase-and-numerous-services\">AWS. Despite the pressure, the blockchain continued processing transactions as normal.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pipe Network noted that average transaction confirmation time on Solana stayed around ~450 ms, with the <span data-descr=\"shows that 90% of all transactions are executed faster than this value\" class=\"old_tooltip\">p90<\/span> metric below 700 ms.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Solana founder Anatoly Yakovenko called both the episode and the chain\u2019s response a \u201cbullish\u201d factor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On 14 December the L1 network <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/sui-an-ambitious-blockchain-and-cryptocurrency-from-meta-alumni\">Sui<\/a> also came under a DDoS attack. In its case the incident caused delays in block production.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-6a609703364c1841-1542486740345484.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272208\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/matteodotsui\/status\/2000307126972125688\">X<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the week the Solana Foundation also <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/solana-tests-quantum-resistant-transactions\">entered into a partnership<\/a> with Project Eleven to prepare the network for potential threats from quantum computers. Specialists assessed the blockchain\u2019s risks and created a testnet prototype using post-quantum digital signatures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOur responsibility is to ensure the blockchain\u2019s security not only today, but for decades ahead. Journalist Kuai Dong expressed a similar view.<\/p>\n<p>Local mining community sources said Chinese authorities confiscated or disconnected 200,000 to 400,000 bitcoin-mining devices.<\/p>\n<p>Some specialists cited <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/chinas-share-in-bitcoin-mining-surpasses-14\">a Reuters report<\/a> published at the end of November. The agency said the mining sector in China is undergoing a \u201cquiet revival\u201d \u2014 the country\u2019s share of global hashrate has risen to 14%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, MinerMag journalists noted that the drop in hashrate was unrelated to China and was temporary.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the output of large pools of Chinese origin \u2014 Antpool, F2Pool, ViaBTC, SpiderPool and Binance Pool \u2014 fell by 100 EH\/s. Many of them are located outside the PRC, so some may have suffered from problems beyond the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By 17 December most participants had almost fully recovered capacity.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-c44293111bb6ef43-1542486963458537.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272205\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: Miner Weekly.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, it is quite likely that some miners in Xinjiang could have voluntarily switched off at the weekend so as not to attract attention during inspections, and then quietly returned to the network when the pressure eased,\u201d MinerMag added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Details of Ethereum\u2019s next hard fork\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Ethereum developers <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereums-hegota-hard-fork-scheduled-for-late-2026\">revealed<\/a> the name of the second upgrade planned for 2026. The hard fork was dubbed Hegota \u2014 after the city of Bogot\u00e1 (the site of Devcon) and the star Heze.<\/p>\n<p>The main improvement proposal for the upgrade will be chosen no earlier than February. The leading candidate is the introduction of Verkle trees \u2014 an algorithm for structuring data in the protocol, similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-merkle-tree\">Merkle trees<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Attention will be given to history and state expiry mechanisms, as well as further execution-layer optimisations. <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-foundation-warns-of-blockchain-bloat\">The \u2018network bloat\u2019 problem<\/a> is becoming increasingly acute for node operators.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the new details, the team fixed a stable cadence of two hard forks a year. Before Hegota comes Glamsterdam. The latter may include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span data-descr=\"enshrined Proposer-Builder Separation\" class=\"old_tooltip\">ePBS<\/span> \u2014 splitting proposers and builders at the protocol level to reduce centralisation;<\/li>\n<li>access lists \u2014 optimising access to the network state;<\/li>\n<li>gas repricing \u2014 adjusting operation costs in the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-the-ethereum-virtual-machine-evm\">EVM<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Also on ForkLog:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MetaMask <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/metamask-introduces-bitcoin-support\">added<\/a> bitcoin support.<\/li>\n<li>Pressure from Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trumps-pressure-accelerates-cryptocurrency-adoption-in-venezuela\">accelerated<\/a> crypto adoption in Venezuela.<\/li>\n<li>Tether <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/tether-introduces-cloud-free-password-manager\">unveiled<\/a> a password manager without cloud storage.<\/li>\n<li>Jump Trading <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/jump-trading-accused-of-direct-involvement-in-terras-collapse\">was accused<\/a> of directly aiding Terra\u2019s collapse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USDC for banks\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>Payments giant Visa <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/visa-introduces-usdc-settlements-for-u-s-banks\">launched<\/a> USDC settlement in the United States for issuing and acquiring banks. Financial institutions can now transact directly in the stablecoin via the company\u2019s infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative runs on the Solana blockchain. The first participants are Cross River Bank and Lead Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The key change is a shift to daily settlement, speeding up transactions and simplifying liquidity management. Financial institutions will be able to move funds seven days a week, abandoning the traditional five-day schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Circle representatives noted that the integration will help banks modernise treasury operations while maintaining transparency and security.<\/p>\n<p>Visa also became a design partner of Arc, a new layer-1 blockchain from the USDC issuer, which <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/circle-launches-arc-blockchain-testnet\">is<\/a> in public testnet.
