Bitcoin is a new way for people to protect themselves,&#8221; wrote the Bitwise CEO.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Cryptocurrency trading is permitted in Iran, but the rules for asset storage remain somewhat unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Mining is strictly regulated, with authorities intensifying their crackdown on illegal cryptocurrency mining in the country. In November, 104 farms were <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/nearly-400000-illegal-asic-miners-discovered-in-iran\">shut down<\/a> in Tehran alone, and 1,465 devices were seized.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is happening in Iran?<\/h2>\n<p>In early December, the price of the Iranian rial plummeted to a record low in the history of the Islamic Republic \u2014 1.2 million per US dollar.<\/p>\n<p>By December 28, the national currency had fallen to 1.44 million per dollar. This led to a sharp increase in purchase prices for entrepreneurs, prompting shop owners and other businesspeople to take to the streets of Tehran. They were soon joined by ordinary citizens with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IranIntl_En\/status\/2005668847890882746\">political slogans<\/a>; the protests became widespread and spread to other cities, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-12-29\/protests-erupt-in-iran-s-capital-as-currency-drops-to-record-low\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Police harshly dispersed the protesters, using tear gas against them.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-7aa67e6c4a37490c-2296078150990870.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272807\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Protest in Tehran. Source: Bloomberg.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The exchange rate recovered to about 1.38 million, but the situation remains critical.<\/p>\n<p>According to media reports, the government has already held an emergency meeting to discuss &#8220;currency, trade, and social policy.&#8221; Following this, it was announced that the head of the local central bank, Mohammad Reza Farzin, had resigned. He was replaced by former economy minister Abdolnaser Hemmati.<\/p>\n<p>When Farzin took office in 2022, the rial was trading at about 430,000 per dollar.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg highlighted that the crisis in Iran is rooted in US sanctions. Another blow to the economy was the war with Israel, noted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7295df7f-5e4b-4fe6-a266-7390c71412f5\">Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the state statistical center, inflation in December <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iranintl.com\/en\/202512280124\">rose<\/a> to 42.2% year-on-year and 1.8% compared to November. Food prices jumped 72%, and health and medicine costs rose 50% compared to the same period last year.<\/p>\n<p>Local media also reported that the government plans to raise taxes in the new Iranian year (beginning March 21).
