There was plenty of good news for digital assets, yet caution remained warranted.<\/p>\n<p>Rising institutional demand and regulatory advances coincided with big hacks, reminders of past blow-ups and routine corrections. Even so, the past 12 months made one thing clear: crypto has become a lasting part of the global financial system.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Events<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New peaks and extreme fear<\/h3>\n<p>The year confounded investors\u2019 expectations, but it was certainly no failure for bitcoin. Markets served up variety: from fresh all-time highs (ATHs) and extreme greed to record liquidations and outright panic.<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin entered January near December\u2019s close\u2014around $92,000\u2014already in rally mode, fuelled by Donald Trump\u2019s victory in the US presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>The next ATH arrived quickly. On 20 January, on the eve of the US president-elect\u2019s inauguration, bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-nears-112000-amid-institutional-buying-spree\">hit<\/a> $109,000 (the prior record at $108,000 had been set a little over a month earlier).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-7768220c8d5d0649-2245530116647120-1024x488.png\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272787\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-7768220c8d5d0649-2245530116647120-1024x488.png 1024w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-7768220c8d5d0649-2245530116647120-300x143.png 300w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-7768220c8d5d0649-2245530116647120-768x366.png 768w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-7768220c8d5d0649-2245530116647120-1536x732.png 1536w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-7768220c8d5d0649-2245530116647120.png 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Weekly BTC\/USDT chart on Binance (arrows mark 2025\u2019s peaks). Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/symbols\/BTCUSDT\/\">TradingView<\/a>.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the new high, the coin slid into a drawn-out, five-month correction, bottoming near $74,500 in early April; it never dropped below that level.<\/p>\n<p>The main cause of the stall was likely a \u201cstop sign\u201d from the <span data-descr=\"US Federal Reserve System\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Fed<\/span> on rate cuts. At its first meeting of 2025 the central bank <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-surges-past-105000-following-fed-meeting\">halted<\/a> the easing cycle, leaving its policy rate unchanged at 4.25\u20134.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Though nearly every Fed meeting injected volatility, the rate stayed put until late July.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-8ce0b492a69f85ed-2245526032873515.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272760\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Policy rate through 2025. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/chart\/34229\/additional-reciprocal-tariffs\/?srsltid=AfmBOooCvPgTfwIibZpzkiilOzEPfanLfJ_2wZyzTakRMSOEbSP-7qpS\">Statista<\/a>.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even at December\u2019s final meeting, the Fed cited tariffs as a prime cause of America\u2019s economic stagnation.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ctariff war\u201d weighed on crypto too: each announcement of new countermeasures by Mr Trump triggered corrections.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the headwinds, in April bitcoin returned to a six\u2011figure price and in May <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-nears-112000-amid-institutional-buying-spree\">set<\/a> a new ATH at $112,000. All told, the funds absorbed 6.49% of supply.<\/p>\n<p>BlackRock\u2019s IBIT remains the segment\u2019s unchallenged leader, with $67bn under management.<\/p>\n<p>Although there were more negative months for ETFs than in 2024, institutions and corporates showed steady interest in digital gold.<\/p>\n<p>Summer brought another rally, as hopes of US monetary easing built. On 10 July the coin <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-surges-to-new-high-above-113500\">broke through<\/a> $113,000; days later it <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-breaches-a-record-120000-amid-institutional-demand\">reached<\/a> $123,000. In parallel, total crypto market capitalisation <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/cryptocurrency-market-capitalisation-surpasses-4-trillion-for-the-first-time\">surpassed<\/a> $4trn for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/en\/charts\">CoinGecko<\/a>, the peak was $4.3trn, before a retreat to around $3.05trn by year-end.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-b9cc96d241a068e0-2245526452394560-1024x465.png\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-b9cc96d241a068e0-2245526452394560-1024x465.png 1024w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-b9cc96d241a068e0-2245526452394560-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-b9cc96d241a068e0-2245526452394560-768x349.png 768w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-b9cc96d241a068e0-2245526452394560.png 1163w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data as of 29 December 2025. Source: CoinGecko.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In August, digital gold set another ATH above $124,000.<\/p>\n<p>Through the summer the Fed held rates at 4.25\u20134.5%, but on 17 September it <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/fed-cuts-key-rate-bitcoin-holds-at-117000\">voted<\/a> to cut by 25bp. That bolstered bitcoin\u2019s price, then languishing near $110,000.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed\u2019s turn opened the way to the year\u2019s final record. On 6 October the coin hit a new high <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoins-surge-to-126000-revitalises-retail-investors\">above $126,000<\/a>. Although the US government <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/qcp-outlines-factors-supporting-bitcoin-into-year-end\">shutdown<\/a> that began in late September initially buoyed crypto, \u201cblood-red\u201d days followed the ATH.<\/p>\n<p>11 October entered lore as <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/black-saturday-11-october-what-happened\">\u201cblack\u201d Saturday<\/a>. Bitcoin fell below $111,000, printing a $20,000 daily candle for the first time. Liquidations topped $19bn, the most ever. A fresh round of US tariffs on China sparked the sell-off.<\/p>\n<p>By November, the price <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/extreme-fear-bitcoin-slips-below-the-100000-psychological-mark\">slipped below<\/a> the psychologically important $100,000 level.<\/p>\n<p>The crypto <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-cryptos-fear-and-greed-index\">fear and greed index<\/a> then fell into \u201cextreme fear\u201d for the second time that year\u2014the first came after Mr Trump\u2019s tariffs in February. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/alternative.me\/crypto\/fear-and-greed-index\/\">Alternative<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/federal-reserve-cuts-interest-rate-for-third-consecutive-time\">continued easing<\/a> by the Fed and the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/americas-longest-government-shutdown-ends\">end of the 43\u2011day shutdown<\/a>, bitcoin failed to recapture $100,000. Some analysts even <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/analyst-warns-bitcoin-could-fall-to-10000-in-2026\">mooted<\/a> a slide below $10,000 in 2026; others <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitwise-and-grayscale-predict-bitcoins-new-peak-by-2026\">forecast<\/a> the rally would resume as institutional support strengthens.<\/p>\n<p>Most market participants agreed the four\u2011year, halving-based bitcoin cycles <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/grayscale-says-bitcoin-could-defy-four-year-cycles\">have run their course<\/a>. A steadier, if less explosive, ascent now awaits.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">State bitcoin reserves and the GENIUS Act\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>If 2025\u2019s price action can be debated, its regulatory progress cannot. Much of the good news came from the US, but other countries tried to keep up.<\/p>\n<p>First, Mr Trump partially dispelled doubts that he would renege on crypto promises. On 6 March the US president <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-establishes-u-s-strategic-bitcoin-reserve\">signed<\/a> an executive order establishing a national bitcoin reserve (SBR).<\/p>\n<p>The order provides for holding assets confiscated by the Treasury in criminal and civil cases. Sales from the new fund are prohibited; the hoard will serve as a long-term store of national assets.<\/p>\n<p>The order also creates a separate altcoin treasury, populated solely from seizures. Those assets may be sold in exceptional cases if the Treasury deems it necessary.<\/p>\n<p>State-level \u201ccrypto reserve\u201d laws were also adopted in <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/new-hampshire-pioneers-bitcoin-reserve-legislation-in-the-us\">New Hampshire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/arizona-becomes-second-u-s-state-to-establish-crypto-reserve-law\">Arizona<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/texas-approves-bitcoin-reserve-legislation\">Texas<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcointreasuries.net\/entities\/united-states\">BitcoinTreasuries<\/a>, the US government holds 328,372 BTC worth $28.77bn.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"493\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-1426ef52ec1b4ee0-2245526487738634-1024x493.png\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-1426ef52ec1b4ee0-2245526487738634-1024x493.png 1024w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-1426ef52ec1b4ee0-2245526487738634-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-1426ef52ec1b4ee0-2245526487738634-768x369.png 768w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-1426ef52ec1b4ee0-2245526487738634.png 1393w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data as of 29 December 2025. Governments that said they were weighing some form of crypto reserve included:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ukraine\u2014where lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ukrainian-bill-proposes-crypto-assets-in-state-reserves\">filed<\/a> a bill on holding cryptoassets in state reserves;<\/li>\n<li>Kyrgyzstan\u2014provisions for an SBR were <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/kyrgyzstan-approves-bill-for-bitcoin-reserve\">approved<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Kazakhstan\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/kazakhstan-to-establish-bitcoin-reserve-worth-up-to-1-billion\">will create<\/a> a bitcoin reserve of up to $1bn;<\/li>\n<li>Germany\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/germany-considers-recognizing-bitcoin-as-a-strategic-asset\">will consider<\/a> recognising bitcoin as a strategic asset;<\/li>\n<li>Sweden\u2014the idea of a bitcoin reserve was <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/swedish-finance-minister-urged-to-consider-bitcoin-reserve\">floated<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Czechia\u2014the central bank <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/czech-central-bank-establishes-1-million-test-crypto-portfolio\">created<\/a> a $1m test crypto portfolio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another US milestone came in July, when Mr Trump signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/donald-trump-enacts-stablecoin-legislation\">GENIUS Act<\/a>, setting rules for stablecoins and marking the country\u2019s first consequential crypto statute.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers passed three significant digital-asset bills in all, including the CLARITY Act and the Anti-<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-central-bank-digital-currency-cbdc\">CBDC<\/a> Act.<\/p>\n<p>The GENIUS Act requires full backing of \u201cstablecoins\u201d with liquid assets and annual audits for issuers with market caps above $50bn. It bars the payment of interest or other income to stablecoin holders and sets guiding rules for foreign firms in the segment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cGENIUS Act creates a clear and simple regulatory framework to build and unlock the enormous potential of dollar-backed stablecoins,\u201d said Trump at the signing ceremony.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Under the law, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/cftc-approves-bitcoin-and-usdc-as-collateral\">launched<\/a> a pilot to use digital assets as collateral in derivatives markets.<\/p>\n<p>In parallel, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/fdic-unveils-initial-stablecoin-regulations-under-genius-act\">published<\/a> the first draft rules governing how banks apply to issue stablecoins. The proposal covers depository institutions that want to set up issuing subsidiaries.<\/p>\n<p>By enacting the GENIUS Act, the world\u2019s biggest economy effectively opened the door to the legal use of dollar stablecoins. Banks and other firms can now issue and use them \u201cin the clear\u201d, a shift that should add momentum to the industry.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The biggest hack on record<\/h3>\n<p>On 21 February the crypto world watched one venue\u2014Bybit. Staff said the incident occurred while moving ETH from cold <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-multisignature-what-is-a-ring-signature\">multisig<\/a> storage to a hot wallet.<\/p>\n<p>Attackers replaced the signing interface so all participants saw the \u201cright\u201d address. In reality, the hackers gained control of the Ethereum wallet and drained it by altering a smart contract\u2019s logic.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Zhou said the platform remained fully solvent. Bybit continued to process withdrawals, albeit with delays. The FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/fbi-confirms-north-korean-involvement-in-bybit-hack\">confirmed<\/a> it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The thieves quickly laundered the proceeds via mixers and other services, swapping some mETH and stETH into ETH on decentralised exchanges. They split 10,000 ETH across 36 addresses and bridged into other networks.<\/p>\n<p>They laundered the lot in roughly ten days.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks largely to Bybit, 2025 was Lazarus\u2019s banner year. Under accusations of links to the hackers, the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/exch-platform-to-shut-down-amid-bybit-money-laundering-allegations\">eXch<\/a> platform shut down.<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath, the community <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/experts-oppose-ethereum-rollback\">floated<\/a> an Ethereum state \u201crollback\u201d to restore the loot\u2014inviting comparisons with The DAO\u2019s 2016 hack.<\/p>\n<p>Most opposed a fork, so the funds look lost for good\u2014despite Bybit\u2019s CEO saying they had the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ben-zhou-majority-of-stolen-bybit-funds-remain-traceable\">ability to trace<\/a> more than half of the haul.<\/p>\n<p>Per the exchange\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lazarusbounty.com\/en\/\">tracker<\/a>, over 90% of the assets have \u201cgone dark\u201d (~$1.28bn). There were no major collapses or bankruptcies\u2014credit to the exchange and to a market that avoided panic.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Ethereum upgrades<\/h3>\n<p>After criticism of 2024\u2019s slow pace, Ethereum\u2019s developers shipped two major upgrades.<\/p>\n<p>On 7 May the network <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-activates-major-pectra-upgrade\">activated<\/a> Pectra\u2014the chain\u2019s biggest hard fork by number of proposals. Chief among them is EIP\u20117594, which adds the PeerDAS protocol. The co\u2011issuer of USDC <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/media-usdc-stablecoin-issuer-valued-at-6-9bn-after-ipo\">took place<\/a> on 5 June on the NYSE under ticker CRCL. Post\u2011<span data-descr=\"initial public offering\" class=\"old_tooltip\">IPO<\/span> valuation was $6.9bn. Already sizeable, their market cap set new records in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/en\/categories\/stablecoins#key-stats\">CoinGecko<\/a>, the total rose from $205bn to $312bn over 12 months. The largest niche is private credit, followed by US Treasuries.<\/p>\n<p>Standard Chartered estimates tokenised assets <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/standard-chartered-projects-rwa-market-capitalization-to-reach-2-trillion-by-2028\">will rise<\/a> to $2trn by 2028. The bank\u2019s head of research, Geoffrey Kendrick, argues that stablecoins\u2019 rise laid the groundwork.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strategy\u2019s imitators<\/h3>\n<p>In 2025, interest in crypto reserves spread from governments to corporates. The pioneer for five years has been Strategy, Michael Saylor\u2019s firm\u2014with 672,497 BTC worth over $58bn, per <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcointreasuries.net\/\">BitcoinTreasuries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-32d4d5279c44acf4-2245530006221132.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272784\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data as of 29 December 2025. If the pioneer can still justify its buys, newcomers drew plenty of questions.<\/p>\n<p>In all, 211 companies are accumulating bitcoin. They hold about 1.08m BTC\u2014roughly $95.5bn\u2014or 5.1% of supply.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile spot bitcoin ETFs hold around 1.37m BTC ($112.5bn), or 6.57% of supply. Institutional vehicles thus control over 11% of the float.<\/p>\n<p>A further 67 firms added Ethereum to their balance sheets, amassing 6.81m ETH worth $19.9bn (5.6% of circulating supply).\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-596792edee02a714-2245527508486478.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272779\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data as of 29 December 2025. Strategy\u2019s stands near 0.8.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-f9a85c77f2b3209b-2245530176469338.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272782\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: CoinShares.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By year-end the growth of corporate crypto reserves <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/corporate-bitcoin-reserves-growth-slows-significantly\">slowed sharply<\/a>; some experts likened the trend to a bubble. Coinbase Institutional <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/corporate-bitcoin-treasuries-pose-systemic-risks-to-crypto-markets\">called<\/a> the corporate-bitcoin-reserve boom a key systemic risk.<\/p>\n<p>Concerns over weaker players raised fears of cascading sell-offs, prompting caution.<\/p>\n<p>Some risks have already materialised. In November DAT firm Sequans <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/dat-firm-sequans-sells-970-btc-to-reduce-debt-amid-bitcoin-slide\">sold<\/a> 970 BTC for $94.5m to repay debt after bitcoin fell; its shares slid 16%.<\/p>\n<p>Critics also seized on the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/shares-of-bitcoin-firm-twenty-one-capital-drop-20-on-first-trading-day\">botched December debut<\/a> of Twenty One Capital, backed by Cantor Fitzgerald and Tether. Its stock fell 20% on day one, despite the firm ranking third by bitcoin reserves.<\/p>\n<p>A crash in the DAT segment could hit crypto hard. For now, with big players involved, the sector looks relatively stable\u2014and 2026 does not obviously portend major trouble.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Celebrity memecoins<\/h3>\n<p>Of course, 2025 had its meme trend. The \u201cquick\u201d and vapid Solana memecoins faded; celebrity tokens took their place.<\/p>\n<p>The wave was kicked off by the US president himself and TRUMP. On 18 January Mr Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-to-know-about-donald-trumps-memecoin-surge-supply-and-industry-impact\">announced<\/a> an \u201cofficial\u201d memecoin on Solana. TRUMP now trades near $5.<\/p>\n<p>By NYT\u2019s count, TRUMP investors <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/nyt-assesses-investor-losses-from-trump-memecoin-investments\">sustained<\/a> losses of roughly $2bn, affecting more than 813,000 users.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond disgruntled buyers, the presidential token raised ethical concerns. The US Senate\u2019s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trumps-crypto-ventures-under-scrutiny-for-conflict-of-interest\">opened<\/a> a probe into possible conflicts of interest.<\/p>\n<p>A subsequent promise of a dinner for TRUMP holders <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trumps-dinner-for-trump-token-holders-sparks-impeachment-calls\">triggered<\/a> calls for impeachment. No sanction has followed.<\/p>\n<p>A day after TRUMP, Mr Trump\u2019s wife launched another family token. MELANIA <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/melanias-meme-coin-leaves-traders-pining-for-gary-gensler\">launched<\/a> and traced a similar path on smaller volumes: a sharp pop followed by a collapse. ERICTRUMP\u2019s market cap <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/meme-coin-erictrumps-market-cap-hits-140-million-before-99-crash\">hit<\/a> $140m within a day\u2014before crashing 99%.<\/p>\n<p>The saga prompted questions about possible <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/insiders-allegedly-profited-nearly-100-million-from-melania-purchases-before-launch\">insider trading<\/a>. Some analysts found a trader group netted nearly $100m on MELANIA\u2019s launch.<\/p>\n<p>The political\u2011meme era did not end there. Its apex was LIBRA\u2019s debut.<\/p>\n<p>In February Argentina\u2019s president, Javier Milei, promoted the token on social media; within hours it <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/libra-token-promoted-by-argentinas-president-plunges-94\">plunged<\/a> 94%. Pitched as a \u201cprivate initiative\u201d, the project was touted as a tool to \u201cstimulate Argentina\u2019s economic growth\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-0623cad39461da89-2245531130629877.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272794\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data: <a href=\"https:\/\/dexscreener.com\/solana\/bzzmnvfm7t6zsgfelxzermrxfkanldo4fszvsisxcszz\">Dex Screener<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The uproar triggered a probe by the local Anti\u2011Corruption Office. Mr Milei <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/argentine-anti-corruption-agency-clears-president-in-libra-token-scandal\">was cleared<\/a>, but the US Department of Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-justice-department-investigates-libra-and-argentine-president\">opened<\/a> its own investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Analytics firm Bubblemaps <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/analysts-link-libra-and-melania-tokens-to-a-single-team\">linked<\/a> LIBRA to Kelsier Ventures\u2019 CEO, Hayden Davis. He and his team were behind several other memecoins, including MELANIA and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/on-chain-analysts-link-yzy-token-to-libra-as-rappers-coin-plummets-60\">YZY<\/a> from rapper Kanye West.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>All fraud charges were laid at Mr Davis\u2019s and associates\u2019 door. Despite an international wanted notice, he spent the year <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/libra-and-melania-creator-continues-token-launches-despite-interpol-notice\">launching<\/a> celebrity tokens and siphoning leftovers from wallets.<\/p>\n<p>No celebrity tied to promoting the scams has been held to account.<\/p>\n<p>In hindsight every headline celebrity memecoin launch of 2025 ended in failure. Yet star wattage and belief kept retail buying. One hopes the carousel of scams taught some not to trust easy money in crypto\u2014even when promised by a president.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perp\u2011DEX<\/h3>\n<p>For DeFi, 2025\u2019s breakout was <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/perp-dex-old-tricks-new-tech\">perp-DEX<\/a>\u2014decentralised derivatives exchanges. In November their volumes reached $1.31trn; for an incomplete December, $972m.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"260\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-f6bb7dcf64d6d9c8-2245531072268272-1024x260.png\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272796\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-f6bb7dcf64d6d9c8-2245531072268272-1024x260.png 1024w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-f6bb7dcf64d6d9c8-2245531072268272-300x76.png 300w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-f6bb7dcf64d6d9c8-2245531072268272-768x195.png 768w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-f6bb7dcf64d6d9c8-2245531072268272-1536x391.png 1536w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-f6bb7dcf64d6d9c8-2245531072268272.png 1659w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Data as of 29 December 2025. High transaction speed, no <span data-descr=\"know-your-customer\" class=\"old_tooltip\">KYC<\/span> and ample liquidity made it a favoured venue for whales.<\/p>\n<p>It also let the market track big players\u2019 moves, including <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/rise-of-a-neo%e2%80%91grifter-who-is-james-wynn-and-what-andrew-tate-has-to-do-with-it\">James Wynn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hyperliquid did not keep the volume crown for long. Aster\u2014a decentralised venue for perpetuals\u2014overtook it, helped along by Binance founder Changpeng Zhao.<\/p>\n<p>Points drove user growth, while Mr Zhao\u2019s presence amplified buzz. Within days of its September launch, ASTER\u2019s capitalisation reached several billion dollars, though it fell markedly by year-end.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-089b2af2e18f55b7-2245531283494353-1024x488.png\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-272795\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-089b2af2e18f55b7-2245531283494353-1024x488.png 1024w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-089b2af2e18f55b7-2245531283494353-300x143.png 300w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-089b2af2e18f55b7-2245531283494353-768x366.png 768w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-089b2af2e18f55b7-2245531283494353-1536x732.png 1536w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-089b2af2e18f55b7-2245531283494353.png 1835w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Daily ASTER\/USDT chart on Binance (as of 29 December 2025). Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradingview.com\/chart\/XQSQJA42\/?symbol=BINANCE%3AASTERUSDT\">TradingView<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TRON\u2019s founder, Justin Sun, joined the fray too, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/justinsuntron\/status\/1973353334175309840?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">announcing<\/a> the SunPerp futures platform in October.<\/p>\n<p>The frenzy <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/new-rival-to-hyperliquid-launches-mainnet\">was stoked<\/a> by Lighter, which uses <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-zero-knowledge-proof\">ZKP<\/a> technologies for verification. In autumn it launched an L2 mainnet and quickly grabbed top\u2011tier trading volumes.<\/p>\n<p>There were challenges. Early in the year Hyperliquid faced a string of controversies, including accusations about validator centralisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-dao-decentralised-autonomous-organisation\">DAO<\/a> governance and contentious leadership decisions.<\/p>\n<p>On 26 March high\u2011risk positions of about $8m on the DEX also threatened platform stability and the Hyperliquidity Provider Vault\u2019s client funds.<\/p>\n<p>Later Aster, too, was suspected of inflating volume statistics. The negativity failed to dent trader interest. With trust in centralised platforms eroding, perp\u2011DEXs are grabbing ever more market share.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Altcoin ETFs<\/h3>\n<p>The mass launch of altcoin exchange-traded funds was another positive outcome of US rule\u2011making\u2014specifically, the replacement of the <span data-descr=\"US Securities and Exchange Commission\" class=\"old_tooltip\">SEC<\/span> chair from <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/gary-genslers-departure-a-retrospective-on-the-sec-chairs-tenure\">Gary Gensler<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/paul-atkins-takes-helm-at-sec\">Paul Atkins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over the year, issuers rolled out products tied to coins previously \u201cunacceptable\u201d to the regulator. These included ETH ETFs with <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/americas-first-ethereum-etf-with-staking-launches\">staking<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/sec-approves-launch-of-bitcoin-and-ethereum-based-etf\">combination funds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In September the US <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/xrp-and-dogecoin-etfs-debut-with-55-million-in-trading-volume\">launched<\/a> the first spot ETFs on XRP and Dogecoin from REX Shares and Osprey Funds. Both are not classic ETFs, having been registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940 via simplified listing.<\/p>\n<p>In mid\u2011November \u201cfull\u201d XRP ETFs were approved. Canary (XRPC), 21Shares (TOXR), Grayscale (GXRP), Bitwise (XRP) and Franklin Templeton (XRPZ) offer spot products holding <a href=\"https:\/\/sosovalue.com\/assets\/etf\/us-xrp-spot\">$1.1bn<\/a>\u20140.98% of XRP supply.<\/p>\n<p>On 28 October Bitwise launched BSOL on the NYSE\u2014the first spot Solana ETF with staking. The firm stakes 100% of assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The next day Grayscale rolled out GSOL, converted from a trust, with 77% of coins staked.
