Call it a \u201cquiet evolution\u201d: despite underwhelming price action, on-chain activity is rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On-chain metrics show lower fees and a record number of new addresses. Big players are increasing <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-staking-and-how-to-make-money-from-it\">staking<\/a> positions and ignoring gloom, while the network is running more efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next up are the Glamsterdam and Hegota <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-hard-fork\">hard forks<\/a>, meant to make Ethereum more performant and resilient and to lay a firm foundation for future innovation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article reviews developers\u2019 plans and weighs the asset\u2019s prospects in light of the forthcoming upgrades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A post-Fusaka boost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a month has passed since the major Fusaka upgrade, but Ethereum still trades far below its August ATH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"838\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-28.png\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-94622\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-28.png 838w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-28-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-28-768x455.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">As of 11.01.2026 Ethereum traded 36% below the ATH reached last August. It will let validators check small fragments instead of entire BLOB objects, reducing node load and improving data availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the wake of the upgrade, ETH briefly moved above $3200 (+3%), but over the following month prices changed little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, deep changes to the system have boosted on-chain activity, laying a solid base for future updates and prospects for the second-largest cryptocurrency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At year-end the Ethereum network <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-daily-transactions-hit-record-2-2-million\">set a new record<\/a>: more than 2.2m transfers processed in a single day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"569\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-26.png\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-94619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-26.png 1024w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-26-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/image-26-768x427.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Daily transaction count on Ethereum. The target also rose \u2014 from 10 to 14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The update increased the maximum block size to 2,688KB, which should help throughput. It is the second scaling of this kind since Fusaka; the previous parameter change <a href=\"https:\/\/lab.ethpandaops.io\/ethereum\/forks\/bpo1\">took place<\/a> in December 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team now turns to the next hard fork \u2014 Glamsterdam. It also sits within The Surge phase of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/ru\/roadmap\/\">Ethereum technical roadmap<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Glamsterdam?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Glamsterdam upgrade combines two changes: Amsterdam for the execution layer and Gloas for the consensus layer. Activation is tentatively planned for the first half of 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developers\u2019 goals are to minimise trust in block formation, prepare for parallel transaction execution and optimise gas economics. These steps will let Ethereum scale effectively via <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-are-rollups-and-how-do-they-scale-ethereum\">rollups<\/a> without overburdening nodes or sacrificing decentralisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key technical changes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Built-in role separation (<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eips.ethereum.org\/EIPS\/eip-7732\"><strong>EIP-7732<\/strong><\/a><strong>).<\/strong> The core of the upgrade is enshrining ePBS at the protocol level. Today, separation of the proposer and builder roles works via external add-ons, creating centralisation risks. The new algorithm will require builders to keep block contents hidden until approval. That deprives validators of the ability to censor transactions or profit from reordering (<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-mev-in-ethereum\">MEV<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Access lists (<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eips.ethereum.org\/EIPS\/eip-7928?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><strong>EIP-7928<\/strong><\/a><strong>).<\/strong> Block-level Access Lists will allow predeclaring the data needed to process a block. This should speed up execution and make fees more predictable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A new gas model (<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eips.ethereum.org\/EIPS\/eip-7904\"><strong>EIP-7904<\/strong><\/a><strong>).<\/strong> Operation costs become proportional to real CPU and memory usage. This removes the ability to perform \u201cheavy\u201d computation cheaply and protects the network against DoS attacks. Servicing bulky smart contracts will get pricier, reducing load on validators\u2019 hardware.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Advantages of the updated architecture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>decentralisation<\/strong>. Enshrined ePBS reduces reliance on centralised relays, making the network <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/forklog\/46755\">resistant to censorship<\/a>;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>stability of <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-the-ethereum-virtual-machine-evm\"><strong>EVM<\/strong><\/a>. Optimising gas and data storage costs ensures more predictable smart-contract execution;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>efficiency<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/ethresear.ch\/t\/block-level-access-lists-bals\/22331\">Block-level Access Lists<\/a> allow parallel verification, speeding state access under heavy load;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>containing blockchain bloat<\/strong>. A more accurate gas-pricing model reflects real resource costs, preventing excessive long-term state growth (<a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-foundation-warns-of-blockchain-bloat\">state bloat<\/a>);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>L2 support<\/strong>. Optimised block processing helps the base chain handle rising data from rollups, simplifying L2 publication of transaction batches and proofs;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>validator reliability<\/strong>. Less reliance on external MEV infrastructure cuts operational risk for participants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pitfalls<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Glamsterdam revisits block-handling models, introducing several specific risks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ePBS and MEV risks.<\/strong> Role separation could mean builder failures hit validator revenues. There are also concerns that block building could be monopolised by large players, threatening decentralisation;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>technical complexity.<\/strong> New consensus rules and BALs require tight client synchronisation. Mistakes at this layer could cause chain splits or DoS vulnerabilities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>compatibility issues.<\/strong> A new gas model could \u201cbreak\u201d dapp economics. Developers will need to adapt to new storage prices and opcodes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>operational challenges. <\/strong>Validators may find infrastructure management tougher as intermediaries are removed, and the breadth of simultaneous changes raises systemwide risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How might Glamsterdam affect ETH\u2019s price?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hard forks are typically volatile. Historically, in the 60 days before an upgrade ETH often outperforms bitcoin, making a \u201cbuy the rumour\u201d strategy effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-activates-the-merge-blockchain-shifts-to-pos\">The Merge<\/a> in 2022, Ethereum doubled from its local bottom, then fell 15% after the upgrade. The <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-activates-shapella-hard-fork-on-mainnet\">Shapella<\/a> update in 2023 saw ETH rise 10%, defying fears of mass staking withdrawals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts reckon Glamsterdam could echo <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-developers-activate-dencun-hard-fork-on-mainnet\">Dencun<\/a>, when ETH gained 60% into the hard fork. This lets them ship changes incrementally, avoiding the risks of rare, sweeping protocol overhauls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Glamsterdam arrives in the first half of the year, Hegota is due in the second. The name blends Bogot\u00e1 (the Devcon host city) and the star Heze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final set of improvement proposals (EIPs) will not be approved before February. Services must maintain access to full historical archives, raising operating expenses;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>sync problems<\/strong>. As the dataset grows, state download on new devices slows and becomes less reliable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Possible fixes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethereum\u2019s long-term strategy includes achieving statelessness. Validators would verify blocks without storing the chain\u2019s full history. That would raise throughput but shift storage duties to a smaller set of specialised providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To strike a balance, the EF team is considering three approaches:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>State Expiry.<\/strong> Remove inactive data. Research suggests about 80% of state is unused for over a year, yet nodes keep it. Developers propose a \u201cbest-before date\u201d: old data would be archived and recoverable with cryptographic proofs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>State Archive.<\/strong> Split data into \u201chot\u201d (current and fast-access) and \u201ccold\u201d (historical, stored separately).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Partial statelessness.<\/strong> Nodes would store only fragments of state, while wallets and light clients take on caching. He argues the priority now is not faster confirmations but higher throughput.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says this is achievable thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/vitalik-buterin-identifies-key-to-ethereums-scalability\">PeerDAS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-zero-knowledge-proof\">ZK-proofs<\/a>. Together they could boost throughput by orders of magnitude while preserving decentralisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Has the scaling trilemma been solved?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Early in 2026, Buterin <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/vitalik-buterin-ethereum-is-overcoming-the-scaling-trilemma\">expressed confidence<\/a> that Ethereum is overcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-the-blockchain-trilemma\">the blockchain trilemma<\/a> thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-zkevm\">zkEVM<\/a> and the rollout of PeerDAS.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He expects new kinds of nodes and higher gas limits soon.
