This was reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chosun.com\/english\/national-en\/2026\/01\/22\/CMLQD2MWGBE2VA2WS5PVHVSAIU\/\">local media<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The government agency discovered the missing Bitcoin during a routine audit of confiscated assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An internal audit revealed that the loss was due to a password leak. An employee fell victim to a phishing attack by accessing a fraudulent website.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cWe are currently investigating the circumstances of the loss and the whereabouts of the confiscated assets. We cannot confirm any specific details,\u201d commented representatives of the prosecution to <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yonhapnewstv.co.kr\/news\/AKR20260122191851k2X\"><em>Yonhap News<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In early January, the Supreme Court of South Korea <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/south-korean-court-sanctions-bitcoin-seizure-from-exchanges\">deemed<\/a> the seizure of Bitcoin from exchange wallets legal in criminal cases. Previously, only the confiscation of assets in favor of the state was allowed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uncovering a Criminal Crypto Network\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>On January 19, South Korea <a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20260119003300320\">dismantled<\/a> a money transfer network through which criminals moved digital assets worth 150 billion won (~$110 million).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The local customs service handed over the case to prosecutors, involving three suspects, including a 30-year-old Chinese national. They are accused of violating the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act.<\/p>\n<p>Investigations revealed that over four years, the illegal operation laundered more than $100 million obtained through payment services WeChat Pay and Alipay.
