It was not the first bid in recent weeks to clear that level, and this time it succeeded.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After a brief pullback on Wednesday, 4 March, digital gold <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-briefly-tops-74000\">surged<\/a> to $74,000 for the first time in a month. On Thursday and Friday they turned negative: -$227 million and -$348 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin still reacts sharply to global conflicts and macro signals. A statement by U.S. president Donald Trump ruling out any chance of negotiating a settlement to the situation in Iran sparked a jump in oil prices and a stronger dollar index. SOL slipped 3.5% to $82. TRX added 1.8%.<\/p>\n<p>The analyst Darkfost <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/altcoin-plunge-sets-new-low-since-ftx-collapse\">noted<\/a> that about 38% of altcoins are nearing all-time lows. Conditions in the sector are worse than after the FTX <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/greed-and-recklessness-why-the-ftx-collapse-is-being-likened-to-the-2008-crisis\">collapse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Investors, he said, are shunning risk. Liquidity is rotating from crypto into equities and commodities. Alternative coins are bearing the brunt and losing market share.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As of 8 March the total crypto market capitalisation stands at $2.36 trillion. TheEnergyMag <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/theenergymag-forecasts-heavier-selling-by-bitcoin-miners\">writes<\/a> that recent disclosures by major players suggest the trend may be intensifying.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-cd99040b29916b3e-8195972058128371.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-276415\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: TheEnergyMag.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In recent months, the following sold down their treasuries:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Riot \u2014 in December it sold four times more coins than it mined in 30 days;<\/li>\n<li>Cango \u2014 in February it liquidated 4,451 BTC (60% of reserves);<\/li>\n<li>Bitdeer \u2014 in the same month it fully sold its bitcoin holdings (about 943.1 BTC);<\/li>\n<li>Core Scientific \u2014 it reported plans to sell most of its coins by the end of the first quarter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Analysts estimate that over five months public miners sold more than 15,000 BTC in aggregate.<\/p>\n<p>Data from BitcoinTreasuries also <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/falling-revenues-push-bitcoin-miners-to-swap-crypto-treasuries-for-ai-infrastructure\">indicate<\/a> that bitcoin-mining firms are selling reserves en masse. Proceeds are being funnelled into building infrastructure for artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-261c98d7fdad0921-8195972111462826.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-276422\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: BitcoinTreasuries.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A long-term hoarding strategy is losing appeal as mining revenues decline. If in 2021 bitcoin mining margins reached 90%, the figure has now fallen sharply owing to intense competition, high electricity tariffs and price corrections.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the <span data-descr=\"miners' revenue per unit of computing power expended\" class=\"old_tooltip\">hashprice<\/span> fell below $30 per PH\/s per day. In such conditions, most public players operate at or below break-even.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-4858c9faa7f7b0bd-8195972117503136.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-276418\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: TheEnergyMag.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many miners are also now forced to service debts. The industry tapped credit lines, bitcoin-backed loans and secured bonds to finance operating expenses and large-scale build-outs of AI data centres.<\/p>\n<p>The drop in bitcoin compelled many firms to top up collateral by selling part of their coins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ChatGPT boycott<\/h2>\n<p>Relations between major AI startups and the U.S. military have been a lively topic of late.<\/p>\n<p>In late February OpenAI chief Sam Altman <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/claude-surpasses-chatgpt-in-app-store-amid-pentagon-contract-controversy\">announced<\/a> a partnership with the Pentagon. The company agreed to deploy its AI models on classified military networks.<\/p>\n<p>Anthropic\u2019s chief executive, Dario Amodei, by contrast, publicly refused such contracts. He barred the government from using the project\u2019s neural networks for mass surveillance and for creating autonomous weapons.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although Anthropic was criticised by U.S. authorities\u2014including negative remarks from President Trump\u2014OpenAI faced stiffer blowback from the user community.<\/p>\n<p>After securing the military contract, a Reddit post calling for a boycott of the ChatGPT chatbot drew 30,000 likes, and the quitGPT account on Instagram gained 78,000 followers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 700 employees of Google and OpenAI also signed an open letter. The document urged rejecting the use of AI in surveillance systems or for combat tasks without direct human oversight.<\/p>\n<p>After the backlash Altman moved to clarify matters, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/sam-altman-calls-pentagon-deal-a-mistake-amid-chatgpt-boycott\">promising<\/a> to amend the Pentagon deal. In the new version OpenAI added a clause banning \u201cthe intentional use of artificial intelligence\u201d to spy on U.S. citizens.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOne thing I did wrong: we should not have rushed to do the deal. The issues are very complex and require clear communication. We sincerely tried to de-escalate and to avoid a much worse outcome, but I think it looked opportunistic and sloppy,\u201d the chief executive said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The tweaks did little to change the mood. Investment bank Morgan Stanley, with $1.9 trillion in assets, <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/morgan-stanley-seeks-approval-for-bitcoin-etf-launch\">filed<\/a> with the <span data-descr=\"U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission\" class=\"old_tooltip\">SEC<\/span> to launch a spot bitcoin ETF.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For custody the organisation plans to use Coinbase\u2019s service and BNY Mellon. Most of the bitcoins backing the fund will be held in cold wallets to minimise hacking risk.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past five years Morgan Stanley has steadily expanded its crypto footprint. <\/p>\n<p>In 2021 the bank was the first major U.S. financial institution to <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/morgan-stanley-to-offer-bitcoin-etfs-to-clients\">offer<\/a> its wealthy clients access to NYDIG\u2019s bitcoin fund. In 2024 the company <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/morgan-stanley-to-offer-bitcoin-etfs-to-clients\">allowed<\/a> advisers to recommend exchange-traded vehicles based on the first cryptocurrency from BlackRock and Fidelity. In autumn 2025 Morgan Stanley analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/morgan-stanley-advises-allocating-up-to-4-of-portfolios-to-cryptocurrencies\">advised<\/a> allocating up to 4% of portfolios to cryptocurrencies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another notable development was Western Union\u2019s stablecoin announcement. The USD-pegged USDPT is <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/western-union-to-launch-stablecoin-on-solana-network\">planned to be issued<\/a> on Solana, in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-web3\">Web3<\/a> platform Crossmint.<\/p>\n<p>USDPT\u2019s main feature is direct conversion into national currencies. Users will be able to cash out digital dollars at 360,000 Western Union locations in more than 200 countries.
