The plan includes four <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-hard-fork\">hard forks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, several teams at the EF are launching <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/L9ZOUoRNNB\">https:\/\/t.co\/L9ZOUoRNNB<\/a>, a dedicated resource for Ethereum&#8217;s post-quantum security effort.<\/p>\n<p>What started with early STARK-based signature aggregation research in 2018 has grown into a coordinated, multi-team effort, all open source.\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ethereum Foundation (@ethereumfndn) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ethereumfndn\/status\/2036464704235692454?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 24, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Developers estimate that &#8220;cryptographically significant&#8221; devices will not emerge for another eight to 12 years. However, preparations must begin now.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8220;Quantum computing will eventually break the public-key cryptography that underpins ownership, authentication, and consensus in all digital systems. Work must begin long before the threat becomes a reality,&#8221; the foundation stated.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Ethereum Foundation research team has proposed four key updates:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fork I will provide network validators with a public key that can be activated in the event of a sudden emergence of a quantum computer.<\/li>\n<li>Fork J will reduce gas costs for verifying secure signatures.<\/li>\n<li>Fork L will compress the network&#8217;s ability to express blockchain state in zero-knowledge proofs.<\/li>\n<li>Fork M will protect <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-layer%e2%80%912-solution-in-blockchain\">L2<\/a> networks from future quantum threats.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Developers are considering the first two updates for inclusion in the upcoming Hegota hard fork, expected this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Updates by Levels and Implementation Timeline\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The transition will affect all three protocol levels:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>execution level<\/strong> will enable a shift to quantum-safe authentication through <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-account-abstraction\">account abstraction<\/a> without mandatory updates;<\/li>\n<li><strong>consensus level<\/strong> will replace the validator signature scheme (BLS) with post-quantum alternatives, specifically hash-based signatures (leanXMSS). PQ signatures lack the native aggregation properties of BLS, so a SNARK-based aggregation approach using a minimal zkVM (leanVM) is being developed;<\/li>\n<li><strong>data storage level<\/strong> will ensure post-quantum security for handling <span data-descr=\"large binary data arrays\" class=\"old_tooltip\">BLOB<\/span> objects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Ethereum team plans to complete the network overhaul by 2029. However, full migration will take several more years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In late February, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-to-implement-quantum-threat-protection\">announced<\/a> a major update to encryption algorithms and transaction verification methods.
