{"id":95839,"date":"2026-04-02T10:30:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T07:30:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/?p=95839"},"modified":"2026-04-03T10:26:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-03T07:26:13","slug":"anthropic-accidentally-deletes-thousands-of-github-repositories-amid-claude-code-leak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/anthropic-accidentally-deletes-thousands-of-github-repositories-amid-claude-code-leak\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthropic Accidentally Deletes Thousands of GitHub Repositories Amid Claude Code Leak"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The AI startup Anthropic inadvertently deleted thousands of repositories on GitHub in an attempt to remove leaked source code of Claude Code from the internet, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/04\/01\/anthropic-took-down-thousands-of-github-repos-trying-to-yank-its-leaked-source-code-a-move-the-company-says-was-an-accident\/\">TechCrunch<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/major-source-code-leak-unveils-hidden-features-of-anthropics-claude-code\">confirmed<\/a> the leak of part of its developer tool&#8217;s code on March 31.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNo confidential client data was exposed. The error occurred during the release packaging. It was caused by human error, not a hack. We are implementing measures to prevent this from happening again,\u201d a company representative stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The incident could weaken Anthropic&#8217;s position, as competitors and third-party developers gained full access to the architecture of the popular product.<\/p>\n<p>The startup issued a request to GitHub to remove repositories under the US copyright law. Approximately 8,100 archives, including forks of the official Claude Code repository, were affected, causing discontent among impacted users.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the Claude Code division, Boris Cherny, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bcherny\/status\/2039426466094731289\">acknowledged<\/a> the mistake. Consequently, the company withdrew most of the takedown requests.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe repositories mentioned in the notice were part of a fork network related to our public Claude Code database. The removal affected more projects than intended. We have withdrawn notices for all but one repository, and GitHub has restored access to the affected forks,\u201d an Anthropic representative reported.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Based on Claude Code<\/h2>\n<p>In light of the incident, enthusiasts <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Gitlawb\/openclaude\">launched<\/a> an open project called OpenClaude, based on the leaked Anthropic code.<\/p>\n<p>The fork includes support for Anthropic&#8217;s <span data-descr=\"application programming interface\" class=\"old_tooltip\">API<\/span> and models compatible with the OpenAI interface.
