The experiment confirmed the blockchain&#8217;s theoretical readiness for future threats, but revealed a significant decline in performance.<\/p>\n<p>The team replaced standard transaction signatures <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-ecdsa-in-bitcoin\">ECDSA<\/a> and validator vote signatures BLS12-381 with post-quantum mechanisms ML-DSA-44 and STARK aggregation.<\/p>\n<p>During the trials, the network&#8217;s throughput for simple transfers decreased by 40% \u2014 from 4973 to 2997 <span data-descr=\"transactions per second\" class=\"old_tooltip\">TPS<\/span>. For mixed loads, the drop was about 35%.<\/p>\n<p>The main barrier to scaling was the sharp increase in data volume:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the size of a typical transaction increased from 110 bytes to 2.5 KB;<\/li>\n<li>the block size grew from 130 KB to ~2 MB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The developers noted that the main issue lies in the limitations of data transmission bandwidth due to the increased block size.<\/p>\n<p>Additional technical details <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/bnb-chain\/bsc\/pull\/3660\">are available<\/a> on GitHub. As part of the <span data-descr=\"preliminary stage of a project to test the technical feasibility of the technology in practice before full-scale development\" class=\"old_tooltip\">Proof-of-Concept<\/span>, the team:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>implemented a new transaction type PQTxType (0x05);<\/li>\n<li>created an on-chain registry PQ Registry (0x70) for storing public keys;<\/li>\n<li>replaced linear BLS aggregation with pqSTARK, allowing validator signatures to be compressed by a factor of 43:1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The choice of the ML-DSA-44 standard is due to its balance between security and key size.<\/p>\n<p>The experiment in BNB Chain demonstrated that transitioning to quantum protection is possible at the level of a major <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-the-ethereum-virtual-machine-evm\">EVM<\/a>-compatible blockchain. The main barrier to implementation is not consensus, but the increased load on the network.<\/p>\n<p>BNB Chain has become one of the first platforms to publicly demonstrate the practical costs of transitioning to PQC. Other blockchains are also actively preparing for the quantum era.<\/p>\n<p>Ripple <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ripple-unveils-strategy-to-shield-xrp-ledger-from-quantum-threats\">introduced<\/a> a plan to protect the XRP Ledger from quantum threats. The initiative involves working in two parallel directions \u2014 gradual migration and an emergency scenario in case of Q-day (the moment classical cryptography is broken).<\/p>\n<p>The non-profit Ethereum Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/ethereum-foundation-to-implement-quantum-security-by-2029\">unveiled<\/a> a roadmap to protect the network from quantum computers. The plan includes four hard forks by 2029.<\/p>\n<p>The Bitcoin community is also actively discussing this issue. Developer Jameson Lopp and a group of experts <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/radical-plan-to-shield-bitcoin-from-quantum-computers-sparks-outrage\">presented<\/a> a draft proposal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bip361.org\/\">BIP-361<\/a>.
