Essentially, they are akin to sports parlay bets\u2014winnings are paid only if all selected outcomes occur.<\/p>\n<p>The Polymarket application also specifies:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>contracts are subject to a 100% margin on the risk amount;<\/li>\n<li>restrictions are imposed on players, coaches, and sports organization employees;<\/li>\n<li>the ban extends to former participants of sports leagues and teams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since the contracts are self-certified, Polymarket is not so much seeking explicit permission to offer them as it is notifying the CFTC of its intent. The document states that the listing will occur &#8220;no earlier than May 21, 2026.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Self-certification is currently a major point of contention surrounding prediction markets.<\/p>\n<p>Critics argue that this mechanism allows platforms to quickly introduce products that essentially resemble sports betting, bypassing traditional state-level regulation and licensing.<\/p>\n<p>Polymarket US has also filed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/filings\/ptc\/ptc0520263804.pdf\">second application<\/a> with the Commission, but requested confidentiality.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regulators on Alert<\/h2>\n<p>Debates over prediction platforms are extending beyond the CFTC. On May 20, US Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Paul Atkins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/newsroom\/speeches-statements\/atkins-statement-novel-exchange-traded-funds-052026\">announced<\/a> the start of a comment period regarding &#8220;novel <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-cryptocurrency-etf\">ETFs<\/a>,&#8221; including funds based on event contracts.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that some issuers have already agreed to temporarily delay the launch of such products while the regulator assesses risks.<\/p>\n<p>On the same day, the Senate Subcommittee on Commerce and Consumer Protection <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/05\/20\/nx-s1-5829166\/senate-panel-hears-testimony-on-online-sports-betting-prediction-markets\">held<\/a> hearings on prediction markets. Representatives from both parties criticized the rapid spread of sports contracts.<\/p>\n<p>The main argument was that such products increasingly resemble traditional bets but operate through a federal financial framework instead of state-level gambling regulation.<\/p>\n<p>Subcommittee Chair Marsha Blackburn stated that lawmakers are concerned about platforms like Polymarket becoming &#8220;shadow sports bookmakers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Chairman Ted Cruz specifically noted that there is &#8220;serious disagreement&#8221; over whether the CFTC should permit sports contracts.<\/p>\n<p>Prediction markets have long troubled lawmakers. Insider trading is a primary topic of discussion. However, only one charge has been filed in the US in this area: active-duty military member Gannon Ken Van Dyke was <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/us-military-officer-charged-with-insider-betting-of-400000-via-polymarket\">suspected<\/a> of using confidential information for blockchain betting.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers more frequently report such cases.
