Bush, and a senior executive at Morgan Stanley.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">Early years<\/h2>\n<p>Warsh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/money\/Kevin-Warsh\">was born<\/a> on 13 April 1970 in New York state, United States. He was the third child in the family. His father was an entrepreneur who owned several companies; his mother was a journalist and author.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The future official attended a public school and then went to Stanford University. In 1992 he earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in public policy with an emphasis on economics and statistics. He continued at Harvard Law School, receiving a Juris Doctor in 1995.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-9caa60588e135533-5315883732431119.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-280454\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kevin Warsh. Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/31\/business\/kevin-warsh-fed-chair.html\">WSJ<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike many predecessors as Fed chair, Warsh is not a traditional economist but rather a specialist in financial regulation and law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">Banking and political experience<\/h2>\n<p>Immediately after Harvard, Warsh went into investment banking. From 1995 to 2002 he worked at Morgan Stanley, rising to vice-president and executive director in the New York mergers and acquisitions group.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Colleagues and partners noted his negotiating skills and ability to execute complex corporate deals. His Wall Street experience later proved crucial during one of America\u2019s toughest financial crises.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002 Warsh left banking for public service in the George W. Bush administration. He served as executive secretary of the White House National Economic Council and then as special assistant to the president for economic policy.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006 Bush nominated Warsh to be one of the seven members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">First stint at the Fed\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>At 35, Warsh became the youngest official ever to hold that post. In office he combined administrative and diplomatic roles, serving as the Fed\u2019s representative to the <span data-descr=\"Group of Twenty\" class=\"old_tooltip\">G20<\/span> and as an emissary to Asian economies.<\/p>\n<p>His main baptism of fire was the 2008 financial crisis. During the Great Recession, Warsh <a href=\"https:\/\/staging.irishtimes.com\/business\/2026\/01\/30\/kevin-warsh-the-fed-chair-nominee-forged-by-the-2008-financial-crisis\/\">acted<\/a> as a bridge between banks and the Fed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He served as a \u201ctranslator\u201d from the markets\u2019 language into that of the regulator, advising chairman Ben Bernanke on what was really happening in the economy.<\/p>\n<p>The official took a direct role in the rescue of American International Group and in arranging the emergency sale of Bear Stearns to JPMorgan to avert a systemic collapse.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWarsh brought enormous real-world experience; he knew those people on Wall Street and understood the difference between when they were pressing their case and when they were giving us reliable information \u2014 and that was very, very valuable,\u201d recalls former Fed vice-chair Don Kohn.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>At the same time Warsh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052748704353504575596762375409760\">aggressively criticised<\/a> the programme of quantitative easing (QE) introduced by the regulator amid the crisis. He feared that sharp rate cuts could unleash uncontrollable inflation.<\/p>\n<p>He was the only policymaker to oppose the second round of QE and publicly voiced concern over the Fed\u2019s decision to buy $600 billion in bonds to push down rates and spur bank lending.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-text-wrappers-cards single_card\">\n<h2 class=\"card_label\">Path to the chair<\/h2>\n<p>After leaving the Fed he joined the G30, an international group of financiers and economists. Over the same period he also held other posts:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution;<\/li>\n<li>a lecturer at Stanford Graduate School of Business;<\/li>\n<li>a member of the UPS board of directors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Warsh\u2019s name first surfaced as a potential Fed chair in 2017, during Donald Trump\u2019s first term. The job, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/pressreleases\/other20180205a.htm\">went<\/a> to Jerome Powell.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the end, the future central-bank chief became an informal adviser to Trump and was considered for Treasury secretary in the second administration, but that post went to <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/donald-trump-expands-cryptocurrency-advocates-in-prospective-administration\">Scott Bessent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Only in early 2026 did Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/trump-nominates-crypto-friendly-kevin-warsh-to-lead-the-fed\">nominate<\/a> Warsh to lead the Fed. The choice drew mixed reactions: Republicans saw a candidate who could \u201crev up\u201d the economy; Democrats feared for the regulator\u2019s independence.<\/p>\n<p>On 12 May the Senate approved Warsh to the Board of Governors by a narrow margin (51 to 45), and the very next day <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/bitcoin-advocate-kevin-warsh-to-lead-the-federal-reserve\">appointed<\/a> him chair (54 to 45).<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/img-099d7fd5c5052e26-5316109768652623.webp\" alt=\"image\" class=\"wp-image-280456\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The current Fed lineup led by Kevin Warsh. Before Senate hearings in April 2026 he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/policy\/2026\/04\/14\/the-next-fed-chair-has-a-crypto-portfolio-here-s-everything-that-s-in-it\">disclosed<\/a> a portfolio valued between $131 million and $209 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The filing listed more than 30 positions spanning almost every corner of the market. Among them:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bitcoin infrastructure.<\/strong> Warsh holds stakes in spot bitcoin <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-cryptocurrency-etf\">ETF<\/a> provider Bitwise Asset Management and <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/lightning-network-faster-cheaper-bitcoin-transactions\">Lightning Network<\/a> start-up Flashnet;<\/li>\n<li><strong>L1 and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-layer%e2%80%912-solution-in-blockchain\"><strong>L2<\/strong><\/a><strong> networks.<\/strong> Direct investments in Solana, Optimism, Blast and other projects;<\/li>\n<li><strong>DeFi.<\/strong> Positions in decentralised protocols dYdX, Compound and Lighter.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Crypto venture.<\/strong> Backer of Polychain Capital, Scalar Capital and Tenderly;<\/li>\n<li><strong>NFT and <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-web3\"><strong>Web3<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Stakes in Dapper Labs, Crossmint, DeSo and other firms at the intersection of crypto and social media.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AI and adjacent technologies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Upon taking office, Warsh must divest most of these assets within a year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He has repeatedly spoken positively about bitcoin and other digital assets, while opposing <a href=\"https:\/\/forklog.com\/en\/news\/what-is-a-central-bank-digital-currency-cbdc\">CBDC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI think bitcoin is a good policeman. It is an important asset that can help policymakers understand when they are doing right and wrong,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2025\/07\/17\/former-fed-governor-kevin-warsh-we-need-regime-change-at-the-fed.html\">noted<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Warsh assumed the chair amid rising inflation and higher bond yields. In parallel, Trump is pressuring the regulator to cut interest rates.<\/p>\n<p>The new chief has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/22\/kevin-warshs-real-fed-regime-change-may-happen-deep-inside-wall-streets-plumbing.html\">drawn up<\/a> a reform plan. He proposed shrinking the Fed\u2019s balance sheet (at the time of writing $6.7 trillion), coordinating more closely with the Treasury, reducing the number of annual meetings and press conferences, and streamlining the Washington staff.<\/p>\n<p>Warsh has called the Fed\u2019s balance sheet \u201cbloated\u201d and said it could be reduced while simultaneously cutting interest rates. Even so, he has pledged to be a \u201cstrictly independent\u201d chair, rejecting any potential Trump entreaties for immediate monetary easing.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing Warsh has yet to take major decisions in office, but many expect sweeping changes to the Fed\u2019s policy under his leadership.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWarsh has a clear goal \u2014 to reform the institutional structure of the Fed, and he is by no means a continuity candidate.
