Elon Musk’s AI encyclopedia faces accusations of far-right bias

Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI launched Grokipedia—an artificial-intelligence-based online encyclopedia “focused on truth.”

“The goal of the project is to create open-source code containing all of humanity’s knowledge. Then its copies, fixed in stable oxide, will be placed in orbit, on the Moon and on Mars to preserve them for future generations,” — said Musk.

The homepage features a large search bar, and the articles themselves are styled similarly to Wikipedia—with headings, subheadings and source links.

“We are not perfect, but we shall strive toward that goal,” the entrepreneur added.

A Wikipedia clone?

Musk bills Grokipedia as a sweeping improvement on Wikipedia, yet some entries copy the site’s content. The end of several articles reads:

“Content adapted from Wikipedia and licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.”

The notice appears on pages for MacBook Air, PlayStation 5 and Lincoln Mark VIII. In many cases the articles are nearly identical to their Wikipedia counterparts—word for word, line by line.

Not all Grokipedia articles are copied from Wikipedia; some differ substantially.

Right or left?

On Grokipedia, the Grok AI takes the lead—determining and moderating content on the platform. Wikipedia relies on a community of volunteer editors and automated tools.

Musk explained that users can add, edit or propose deleting entries, but the AI will make the final decision.

Grokipedia articles indicate that the platform has conducted fact-checking.

Users have begun to notice differences in how entries are framed. One example concerns George Floyd—an African American who died during an arrest in Florida. On Grokipedia, the opening paragraph emphasizes his convictions.

On Wikipedia, it immediately stresses that he was killed by a “white” police officer.

Musk has previously criticised Wikipedia for a left-leaning bias and propaganda. Grokipedia’s article highlights criticism of the site’s factual reliability and a liberal slant in coverage of political figures.

Wikipedia, for its part, characterises Grokipedia as a platform that may shift toward Musk’s “far-right” views.

“NBC News noted that Grokipedia’s article about Musk does not mention the hand gesture he made in January 2025, which many interpreted as a Nazi salute. The Wikipedia article does mention it,” the page says.

Another example of different approaches is the treatment of climate change. On Wikipedia it states the following:

“There is an almost unanimous scientific consensus that the Earth’s climate is warming because of human activity. No reputable scientific organization, national or international, disputes this view.”

On Grokipedia it contains the following formulation:

“Critics argue that claims of an almost unanimous scientific consensus regarding anthropogenic causes of recent climate change exaggerate the degree of agreement due to selective categorization in scientific reviews.”

The text underscores that the media and organizations such as Greenpeace “help amplify public anxiety” and engage in “coordinated efforts to frame the issue as an existential threat, influencing public debate and policy, not always grounded in proportionate empirical evidence.”

Is Musk shaping reality?

In June, Musk said that xAI would rewrite “all human knowledge” to train a new version of the Grok chatbot. In his view, there is “far too much garbage in any base model trained on uncurated data.”

The billionaire faced criticism over the plan. AI specialist Gary Marcus likened it to a dystopia.

Later, users noticed that Grok relies on the entrepreneur’s posts on X. This includes topics such as the conflict between Israel and Palestine, abortion and immigration law.

These observations suggest the chatbot has been deliberately tuned to take Musk’s political views into account when answering contentious questions.

In July, Grok was embroiled in scandal over controversial remarks.
