The Xbox CEO Phil Spencer, in an interview with Bloomberg Technology, said that gamers have been in metaverses for the last 30 years.
According to him, today most games—from World of Warcraft and Roblox to racing simulators—offer a three-dimensional world with the ability to communicate.
“I’m not at all surprised that gamers don’t understand what metaverses are. After all, we already have our own avatar, and we can enter a shared world and talk to people from anywhere,” said an Xbox top executive.
Spencer expressed interest in the development of virtual worlds, but urged caution regarding Play-to-Earn games due to speculation in the market NFT.
In January, Microsoft—the company behind Xbox—announced the $68.7 billion acquisition of game developer and publisher Activision Blizzard.
The company said that the acquisition “will provide building blocks for creating a metaverse”. The deal was expected to close by June 30, 2023.
Earlier, billionaire Mark Cuban called the “dumbest” idea of purchasing land, mansions and other real estate in virtual worlds.
In August, Trend Micro researchers said that the development of metaverses will lead to the spread of traditional cyber threats and the emergence of new ones.
