In December 2020 the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) accused Ripple of selling unregistered securities in the form of XRP worth $1.3 billion.
Against this backdrop, some major platforms and companies stopped supporting the token. Among them were Galaxy Digital, Bitstamp, B2C2, Coinbase and OKCoin.
In March 2021 the regulator said that exchanges were not breaking the rules, selling XRP. Later Ripple chief Brad Garlinghouse said he expected to discuss the token’s status with Gary Gensler after his appointment as SEC chair.
On 3 April attorney James Filan said that agreements between Ripple and the SEC regarding the company’s documents had been reached. The agency declined to conduct a thorough review of two of four emails.
