YouTube CEO lays out plans to deploy AI in the music industry

YouTube chief Neil Mohan noted the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and outlined the platform’s principles for integrating the technology into the music industry.

“AI is here, and we will treat it responsibly together with our music partners,” he said.

Mohan said that in 2023 videos related to generative AI tools on YouTube drew more than 1.7 billion views.

Among the main directions for the company’s development in this area, he highlighted:

  1. Responsible approach. The service collaborates with representatives of the music sector to “expand creative possibilities” and “foster a drive toward innovation.” As part of the initiative, YouTube and Universal Music Group will create the Music AI Incubator platform to research and test generative AI.
  1. Protection of creativity. The top executive reminded of the importance of copyright compliance. He also spoke about the Content ID tool, which guarantees rights holders payment for the use of their content. According to him, the technology, in its years of existence, has brought billions of dollars to the industry.
  1. Development of AI-use rules. The video service team continues to develop a safe environment and new policies for content with artificial intelligence on the platform. As an example, Mohan cited the existing Code of Conduct, prohibiting publishing technically edited content that promotes false claims or misleads viewers.

“Generative AI systems can exacerbate current problems, such as trademark and copyright infringement, disinformation, spam and much more. But AI can also be used to identify such content, and we will continue to invest in technologies that help protect the community of viewers, creators and performers,” emphasised YouTube’s CEO.

In February 2023, Neil Mohan became CEO of the video platform. He is a proponent of digital assets and wrote in his blog about plans to integrate Web3-services, NFT and metaverses on the platform.
