Mark Zuckerberg announced the launch of Meta Compute, a new initiative aimed at bolstering the company’s AI infrastructure.
The tech giant intends to “significantly expand” its presence in the energy sector.
“Meta plans to build tens of gigawatts this decade and hundreds over time. The way we design, invest, and collaborate to create infrastructure will become a strategic advantage,” Zuckerberg wrote.
The entrepreneur named three leaders who will head the project:
- Santosh Janardhan, head of global infrastructure, who has been with the company since 2009. He will oversee the creation of “technical architecture, software stack, chip manufacturing programs, as well as the construction and operation of a global data center fleet and network”;
- Daniel Gross, who joined Meta a year ago. He will lead a new group responsible for “long-term capacity development strategy, supplier partnerships, industry analysis, planning, and business modeling”;
- Dina Powell McCormick, a former government official, will engage with authorities to help “create, deploy, and finance Meta’s infrastructure.”
In November 2025, the corporation plans to start trading electricity to accelerate the construction of new plants in the US. These are crucial for its AI ambitions.
Too few electricity buyers are willing to commit to the long-term obligations necessary to attract investment. Energy trading will allow Meta to enter into more such agreements.
Stable energy supply is becoming an increasingly pressing issue for tech giants like Meta, Microsoft, and Google. As AI systems develop, electricity consumption grows, prompting corporations to seek new solutions.
Back in October, analysts called energy the world’s most valuable resource due to the AI boom.
In November, Google planned to create a satellite system in low Earth orbit to power data centers.
