Microsoft to Invest $2.2 Billion in Malaysia’s AI Infrastructure
In the coming years, Microsoft will invest $2.2 billion in new infrastructure for cloud computing and artificial intelligence in Malaysia.
The funds will be allocated to:
- training 200,000 people in artificial intelligence;
- establishing a national AI center of excellence;
- enhancing the country’s cybersecurity capabilities;
- supporting the growth of the local developer community.
“Our investments in digital infrastructure and workforce training will help Malaysian businesses, communities, and developers leverage the latest technologies to drive inclusive economic growth and innovation across the country,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
According to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the investments will be a key pillar in achieving the government’s goal of expanding AI capabilities in the country.
Microsoft stated that the proposed national AI center will facilitate the adoption of this technology in key industries and the public sector while adhering to regulatory requirements.
“Together with Microsoft, we hope to create more opportunities for our businesses and high-paying jobs by leveraging the AI revolution to accelerate Malaysia’s growth through digital technologies,” said Trade Minister Zafrul Aziz.
Microsoft views Southeast Asia, with its population of over 600 million, as a growing market and a potential hub for AI product development. According to Kearney, by 2030, AI’s contribution to the region’s GDP is expected to reach about $1 trillion, with Indonesia accounting for $366 billion and Malaysia for $115 billion.
On May 1, Microsoft announced the establishment of a new regional data center in Thailand and other initiatives in Southeast Asia.
Back in April, Microsoft announced a $1.7 billion investment in AI infrastructure in Indonesia.
