ENS Developers to Expand Service to Layer 2 Networks

ENS Labs, the firm behind Ethereum Name Service, has announced plans to extend its service to Layer 2 protocols following a recent update.

“Since 2017, ENS has evolved from a simple blockchain naming service into critical internet infrastructure. With millions of .eth names registered and thousands of integrations, ENS has become a bridge between the traditional internet and the decentralized web,” the statement reads.

The announcement highlighted that as Web3 becomes mainstream, Layer 2 solutions are increasingly vital for scaling Ethereum.

“We have long monitored the state of the L2 ecosystem and contributed through internal innovations like CCIP-Read and the EVM gateway. We believe now is the right time to begin migrating some ENS components, such as .eth name registration, to L2,” the developers wrote.

In their view, expanding the user base fosters interest in Layer 2 networks, which offer faster transactions and lower gas costs.

“This move isn’t just about migrating parts of the protocol; we’re re-envisioning the architecture from the ground up,” ENS Labs stated.

In February, the largest DEX, Uniswap, introduced subdomains in the uni.eth format based on ENS infrastructure.
