Russia Suspected of Using AI to Influence US Elections

Russia has generated more AI content to influence the US presidential elections than any other foreign nation, according to a US intelligence official, reports Reuters.

The agency reports that Russia is using AI to support Republican candidate Donald Trump and to “discredit” Vice President Kamala Harris, including through conspiracy theories.

Russia has a better understanding of how US elections work and what objectives to pursue, noted an official from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

The content is disseminated through social media accounts using AI features.

In one instance, “Russian influencers” orchestrated a widely publicized video in which a woman claims to have been a victim of a car accident involving Harris. The presidential candidate allegedly fled the scene.

China is also using AI to create content, but it is aimed at shaping the country’s global perception.

In August, OpenAI removed a group of Iranian accounts for using ChatGPT to create content intended to influence the US presidential elections and other topics.

Previously, the startup blocked the use of its products by cybercriminals linked to various governments.
