Texans File Lawsuit Against Noisy MARA Mining Facility
A lawsuit has been filed against the mining company MARA (formerly Marathon Digital) due to noise from its facility near Granbury, Texas.
More than twenty residents have claimed that the cryptocurrency mining farm is a “nuisance” causing “extreme discomfort and irritation.” The plaintiffs complain of “sensory, emotional, psychological impact, and health effects” due to the “unrelenting” noise and vibrations.
Some citizens have experienced fatigue, headaches, memory problems, hearing loss, migraines, tinnitus, and other ailments, according to the document.
“Even in their own homes, [residents] can hear MARA’s noise and feel the vibrations,” the plaintiffs noted.
The company is also accused of inflating electricity prices due to its high power consumption and reducing property values in the city.
Rodrigo Cantu, an attorney with Earthjustice representing the residents, has demanded that MARA take “immediate action to effectively reduce noise pollution or cease operations entirely.”
The residents are asking the court to prohibit the mining company from operating, to award compensation, and to cover legal costs.
Back in September, residents of the Hadsel commune in Norway succeeded in shutting down a cryptocurrency mining center due to noise, but this resulted in a sharp increase in electricity bills.
