1X to Trial Humanoid Robots in Homes by 2025

Norwegian robotics startup 1X plans to commence early trials of its humanoid robot Neo Gamma “in several hundred or even thousands of homes” by the end of 2025, according to CEO Bernt Bernich in an interview with TechCrunch.

“We will invite early adopters this year to help develop the system. We want it to live and learn among people, […] and they will help train the robot’s behavior,” he noted.

Interest in humanoids has been gaining momentum in recent months. In February, startup Figure announced the launch of alpha testing for its gadgets Figure 02 with proprietary AI Helix in home environments later in 2025.

OpenAI is also exploring the possibility of creating a similar assistant.

Bernich emphasized that Neo Gamma is still far from commercial scaling and autonomy. Although the robot uses artificial intelligence for walking and balance, it is not capable of independent actions.

For testing the humanoid in home settings, cameras and sensors will be integrated to allow operators to remotely control its limbs in real time.

The tests will enable the team to gather data on the robots’ performance in indoor environments, which will then be used to train AI models and enhance Neo Gamma’s capabilities.

Unlike its predecessor Neo Beta, the new version of the bot features improved intelligence and a knitted nylon body suit designed to reduce potential injuries upon contact with humans.

During the presentation of Neo Gamma at GTC, 1X demonstrated the robot’s ability to perform some basic household tasks. At one point, its arms began to shake, and the humanoid fell. A company employee attributed the error to poor Wi-Fi in the conference room and a depleted battery.

Back in March, Swedish AI startup IntuiCell created a robotic dog named Luna with a functional digital nervous system. It is capable of learning and adapting similarly to humans and animals.
