Jack Dorsey’s Block to Introduce Bitcoin Payments via Square

Jack Dorsey’s company Block plans to launch bitcoin payments in the Square app by 2026. Merchants will have the option to hold the digital currency or convert it to fiat in real-time.

The deployment of this functionality through Square terminals and the Lightning Network protocol will commence in the second half of 2025. Full customer coverage is expected by January, pending regulatory approvals.

The announcement was made at a bitcoin conference in Las Vegas.

The initiative builds on the existing Square Bitcoin Conversions feature, which allows merchants to automatically convert revenue into the leading cryptocurrency.

For consumers, payments will be made by scanning a QR code. Square will handle the technical aspects, while the Lightning Network will ensure nearly instant settlement.

“This is about empowering merchants who want choice in accepting payments,” commented Miles Suter, head of bitcoin products at Block.

The company will also integrate new privacy and security features into the Bitkey hardware wallet to enhance accessibility without seed phrases.

In February, Block implemented a cryptocurrency inheritance option in the device.

In May, media outlets reported on a U.S. Federal Prosecutor’s investigation into Square and Cash App over suspicious crypto transactions.
