ICE to track internal Bitcoin transactions

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) plans to automate oversight of domestic financial operations, including Bitcoin transactions. The corresponding software is to complement an existing open-source solution.

The ICE technical department filed the information request. Companies are expected to propose solutions that help digitize existing operations and add a centralized accounting system. It should automate the paperwork associated with financial operations.

ICE cited several examples of Bitcoin usage, including its purchase on exchanges, the subsequent transfer of coins to a personal hardware wallet, and further spending with cryptocurrency. Fees for purchases, miner rewards for processing transactions, and other related costs were also considered.

The agency expects the software to be able to track transfers, purchases, and spending involving Bitcoin.

Companies able to offer a suitable solution may submit proposals by November 9.

This is not the first time that U.S. government agencies have run contests to create solutions related to blockchain or digital currencies.

In September, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security offered developers $25,000 for the design of a digital wallet user interface.

In October, the leading crypto-analytics firm Chainalysis received a contract from the Internal Revenue Service to track transactions on the Monero network, circumventing technologies that ensure their anonymity.
