The firm said that mailings on behalf of the trading platform would run for several days and would be completed by the end of the week. Recipients must register on the Cryptopia claims portal, through which applications are collected.
“We ask you to confirm certain details of your Cryptopia account to ensure that only verified account holders are registered for the claims review process,” said Grant Thornton.
The New Zealand cryptocurrency exchange Cryptopia was hacked in January 2019. Estimates of the loss vary, pegged at about $16 million at the time of the incident.
In May 2019, Grant Thornton began the process of liquidating the company. In November 2020, the auditors announced the intake of claims for refunds.
Earlier in December, some users of the exchange reported letters purportedly from Cryptopia. As neither the platform’s representatives nor Grant Thornton warned about the mail-out, account holders suspected fraud.
