Media reports data breach affecting BuyUCoin users

The hacker group ShinyHunters posted the personal data of BuyUCoin users, the Indian cryptocurrency exchange, on one of the dark-web forums. According to Bleeping Computer.

The database has been made publicly accessible. It contains names, phone numbers, email addresses, tax identification numbers, and bank details of 161,487 BuyUCoin customers.

According to Inc42, more than 325,000 users were affected by the breach. Cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia said that the hackers gained access to data dating back to September 2020.

BuyUCoin stressed that user funds were not affected. The exchange’s representatives said they would conduct an internal investigation.

Back on 25 June 2020, attackers gained access to data of more than a million users of Ledger cryptocurrency wallets.

On 21 December, the database became publicly accessible via the Raidforums forum. Later, Ledger Nano owners began receiving threats from unknown individuals with ransom demands.

In January 2021, the hardware-wallet developer offered 10 BTC to users for helping to identify the cybercriminals responsible for a series of attacks and data breaches.
