Dmitry Medvedev says Russia could be cut off from the global Internet

Russia could be disconnected from the global network, but authorities have a plan for this scenario, said Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev, according to RIA Novosti.

“The Internet, as is known, appeared at a certain time, and, undoubtedly, the key rights to governance reside in the United States. So if something extreme happens, if someone completely loses their head, that could happen. That is because the keys to this chest are overseas,” said Medvedev.

To shield Russia from such a possibility, the ‘sovereign Runet’ law is designed, he noted. “It will help ‘restore or create’ the autonomous operation of the Russian Internet segment, although that will take time,” Medvedev added.

Technologically, “everything is ready for this,” and the corresponding legislative decisions have already been adopted.

At the same time, Medvedev said there are no signs that Russia is going to be disconnected from the global Internet.

Back in 2019, he said that ensuring digital security could threaten personal privacy.
