China’s national blockchain platform adopts an adapted Cosmos

China’s infrastructure blockchain platform BSN (Blockchain-based Service Network) has added Cosmos support to its localized network version.

An adapted version of Cosmos called Wenchang Chain was developed by the Chinese startup Bianjie. It is a permissioned open blockchain (OPB).

Through the OPB initiative, developers can build decentralized applications on the localized BSN in compliance with Chinese law.

\”OPB is an important milestone in the development of blockchain in China. It is an effective way to deploy DLT technologies in a country that does not support cryptocurrency operations,\” said BSN executive director Yifan He.

The first application on the Wenchang Chain network will be the Uptick electronic-ticketing service.

Earlier, He said that Cosmos’ Tendermint technology would form the basis for cross-chain interaction within the BSN ecosystem.

Back in April 2020, the BSN platform was launched by China’s State Information Center. Its aim is to simplify launching blockchain applications and reduce costs. In the BSN white paper, the platform is described as aiming to become the ‘internet of blockchains’.

There are Chinese and international versions of the platform. The former supports only enterprise blockchains, initially Hyperledger Fabric and the Chinese FISCO BCOS. The international version is additionally integrated with many public networks, including Ethereum, EOS, Tezos, Nervos, NEO and IRISnet.

Within the network, users in China will be able to use only the yuan. The system will block paid peer-to-peer transactions in other currencies.

In parallel, the platform is developing a universal digital payment network (UDPN), which will be able to support various central bank digital currencies.
