John McAfee says the case against him is an attack by the US on all cryptocurrencies

Entrepreneur John McAfee said that US authorities are using the case against him to crack down on cryptocurrencies.

He commented on the press release by Gordon Law Group, whose specialists will lead his defense against DOJ charges in Tennessee and New York courts.

Attorney Andrew Gordon noted that McAfee’s case involving criminal tax evasion is one of the first crypto-related cases, “and, undoubtedly, one of the most high-profile cases of its kind.”

The charges against the entrepreneur include failure to file tax returns, tax evasion, and securities fraud related to digital currencies.

In a statement, the case against McAfee “signifies a turning point in the enforcement of cryptocurrency reporting.” Gordon added that regulation of digital assets remains an evolving area for the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice.

«Mr. McAfee maintains his innocence, and we are ready to persuade the U.S. federal courts,» said the attorney.

Earlier, the entrepreneur called the charges of fraud “overblown”.

As reported, he was arrested in Spain in October 2020 by U.S. authorities. McAfee faces up to 100 years in prison.
