IOG to roll out Atala Prism blockchain identity solution in Ethiopia

The Cardano-backed company IOG (formerly IOHK) and the Ethiopian government have signed agreements to deploy the decentralized identity system Atala PRISM in the country.

The solution will be rolled out in 3,500 Ethiopian schools to protect the records of 5 million students from unauthorized access.

Two years ago, IOG’s Charles Hoskinson announced the establishment of a headquarters in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, to deploy blockchain technology in projects across the African continent.

He mentioned supply chains in agriculture and decentralized identifiers in health and transportation. Hoskinson also hinted at a forthcoming deal with a telecommunications operator in Tanzania.

IOG believes that Cardano and Atala PRISM will help \”democratise social and financial services for 1.7 billion Africans\”.

The collaboration with IOG will kick off the implementation of the government’s Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy, under which authorities have introduced a national identification standard. Atala PRISM has become the first ID-issuing system based on it.

The strategy also includes, among other things, the establishment of a stock market and providing all teachers and students with internet-enabled tablets for educational purposes.

In July 2020, Charles Hoskinson said that the Ethiopian government was testing the Atala Prism system.
