Russian hackers suspected in attack on world’s largest meat producer JBS.
The world’s largest meatpacker, JBS, fell victim to a ransomware attack. According to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, the breach was carried out by the REvil hackers.
Because of the attack, which took place on May 30, computer systems of JBS in North America and Australia were affected. The company suspended operation at a number of plants.
The White House said that the breach was probably carried out by hackers based in Russia.
“The White House is engaging with the Russian government on this issue and stresses that responsible states do not shelter ransomware criminals,” said U.S. officials.
According to Bloomberg, the attack was carried out by the ransomware group REvil (also known as Sodinokibi). The hackers are often linked to Russia because they do not attack Russian organisations or enterprises in the former Soviet states.
In October, a representative of the REvil team said that the group’s annual earnings had surpassed $100 mln.
In the spring of 2021, hackers attacked the computer giant Acer and demanded $50 mln in Monero, as well as an Apple supplier.
