Brave launches beta of its private search engine

Brave, the privacy-focused browser, launches a beta of its own private search engine.

The new privacy-preserving #BraveSearch beta is available for all Brave users (desktop/Android/iOS), as well as from other browsers at https://t.co/tBr16frkJI. Built on top of an independent index, it doesn’t track users, their searches, or their clicks. https://t.co/B5xrJv9w6x

To implement Brave Search, the company purchased the Tailcat open-source search engine. It does not collect IP addresses or use users’ personal information.

The beta version of the search engine is available in Brave for desktop and mobile devices on iOS and Android, as well as for other browsers.

“Brave Search is the most private and the only independent search engine that provides users with the control and privacy they seek in alternatives from the big tech companies,” said Brendan Eich, the CEO and co-founder of Brave.

According to the press release, more than 100,000 users applied to test the beta version. The company says Brave’s monthly audience surpassed 32 million active users.

Brave Search operates without ads in the beta. Later developers will offer a choice between free, ad-supported search and a paid version, but without banners.

The company started development of its own decentralized cryptocurrency exchange. The launch date is not yet known.

In January, Brave developers integrated support for the IPFS protocol (‘InterPlanetary File System’).

In February, the Brave marketplace expanded with NFTs.
