Tolkien heirs win ruling that JRR Token infringes copyright
Rights holders to the books of author J.R.R. Tolkien have won a victory in the dispute against the creator of the JRR Token. The Guardian reports this.
The coin, launched in August under the slogan ‘One Token to Rule Them All’, prompted the Tolkien Estate to file a complaint with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
They stated that the site name and the token mislead users and infringe copyright. During the proceedings, the site was renamed to thetokenofpower.com, but it still contained numerous references to Tolkien’s works.
The World Intellectual Property Organization sided with the rights holders. The creator of JRR Token was ordered to remove all infringing content and pay the court costs.
Earlier ForkLog reported that the Stormtrooper helmets collection from Star Wars, as art objects of the Art Wars project was sold as NFTs without the artists’ knowledge.
