Ticket Sales, Shrimp-Supply-Chain Tracking, and Other Blockchain Initiatives
Blockchain technology remains one of the hottest trends among financial, government and commercial organisations worldwide. ForkLog magazine offers an overview of the most interesting recent initiatives.
Thai Union integrates blockchain to track shrimp supply chains
Thai Union, a seafood producer, launched a pilot project to track shrimp supply chains on the blockchain. This was reported by Ledger Insights.
The initiative is aimed at fostering trust across the entire shrimp supply chain with Thai Union farms. Data on the blockchain also guarantees the use of only sustainable seafood sources.
Roundabout Theatre launches blockchain-based ticketing platform
The five-theatre operator Roundabout Theatre launched the True Tickets platform for blockchain-based ticket sales on IBM’s blockchain.
The service generates QR codes to manage rights to contactless digital tickets. The blockchain will prevent counterfeiting and unite information in a single system.
Customers will receive tickets online instead of relying on delivery, printing or the theatre box office.
VKontakte announces blockchain support
Alexander Tobol, the chief technical officer of VKontakte, told in an interview with Vesti about plans for the social network to deploy blockchain and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
The initiative aims to monetize user content and protect copyrights. The company does not plan to create its own blockchain, acting as an intermediary.
According to Tobol, VKontakte’s task is to help choose a blockchain, create content as NFTs, and launch trading on marketplaces.
Kickstarter delays plans to move to blockchain
Kickstarter reconsidered plans to move to a blockchain protocol and into the crypto space after negative community reaction.
In December 2021 the team announced the development of an open-source solution to launch the platform in a decentralized environment.
In a new blog post under the headline “We won’t make changes to Kickstarter without you,” the team said:
“Since our announcement, we have held thousands of conversations with the community via email, support requests, social media and Zoom conferences to understand your concerns. Environmental issues, fraud, speculation and other risks are real — and we share them.”
The platform team has not abandoned the idea of using decentralized technologies but has taken on a number of commitments, including:
- not migrating Kickstarter to the new protocol without proper testing;
- creating an advisory council of users and participants to inform subsequent steps;
- not using energy-intensive blockchain technologies to minimise the carbon footprint.
Kickstarter noted that the new protocol would be developed by an independent organisation — a specially created Public Benefit Corporation.
“We believe the new tooling will help address long-standing problems in crowdfunding, but we are only at the early stages. Each creative community has different needs, and we will need your help to identify the problems and to develop solutions for them,” the platform’s team concluded.
MIPT conducts blockchain voting with Waves Enterprise
Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT) conducted a vote of the dissertation council using the WE.Vote blockchain service, developed by Waves Enterprise.
“At the end of 2021 we conducted 38 defenses using the system. It allows to verify the reliability of all stages of the procedure, guaranteeing the secrecy of the vote. We plan to move to WE.Vote-based voting on a permanent basis,” said Vitaly Bagan, vice rector for scientific work at MIPT.
According to the developers, the distributed architecture of the service and the absence of a single point of failure ensure confidentiality, immutability of information and full transparency for any participant in the process.
Smart contracts prevent unauthorized participants from accessing the voting and verify all user actions for veracity.
