Roskomnadzor unblocks The Tor Project site

The Tor Project’s homepage was unblocked in Russia by a court order. This was сообщила the Roskomsvoboda lawyer Ekaterina Abashina, who represents the organisation in the proceedings.

“Roskomnadzor, of course, dragged its feet far too long on unblocking the site, because the blocking decision was overturned on May 19, and since then there has been no basis for The Tor Project’s site to remain on the register of prohibited information,” she noted.

In addition, the Google company brought into the case, from which it had been demanded to remove the browser from Google Play, requested postponement of the proceedings. The court adjourned the hearing.

Earlier in December 2021, the Tor blockade in Russia began to be recorded. The formal basis for restricting access was the 2017 decision of the Saratov District Court.

Roskomsvoboda lawyers appealed the blockade. In May 2022, the appellate court overturned the Saratov District Court’s decision.

On July 15, the Tor Project team released an updated version of the browser, aimed at circumventing blocks.
