Ex-girlfriend of John McAfee denies his death

In the new Netflix documentary “Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee,” the entrepreneur’s former partner Samantha Herrera says that he is still alive and in Texas. This is reported by Decrypt.

The film’s director, BAFTA-winning Charlie Russell, based the project on archival footage and interviews with McAfee’s close circle. The film premieres on August 24.

Commenting on Herrera’s claim of an alleged call from McAfee after his death, Russell said he did not have a definitive view on the matter.

“She says this, then looks into the camera, and I can’t tell whether she’s sure it’s true,” he said in an Esquire interview.

According to the New York Post, McAfee ended his relationship with Herrera in 2012. He later married Janice Dyson.

In a tweet, the entrepreneur’s widow confirmed his death.

“I wanted the rumors that he was alive to be true. But if that were so, I am sure John would not be hiding in Texas. He was kept in a Spanish prison because of fabricated charges against him by the Internal Revenue Service, so hiding in America would be foolish,” she wrote.

As previously reported, McAfee was arrested in October 2020 in Spain at the request of U.S. authorities. SEC accused the entrepreneur of deceiving investors in promoting ICO projects, and the Justice Department — of tax evasion. In 2021, McAfee was charged with fraud and money laundering.

The entrepreneur himself described the case against him as an attack on all cryptocurrencies and said the charges were politically motivated.

In June 2021, Spain’s Supreme Court allowed McAfee’s extradition to the United States. Hours later, he was found dead in a prison cell.

McAfee’s widow doubted the official version of his suicide and began a petition drive to compel the Spanish government to exhume his remains for an independent autopsy.
