ConsenSys warns that Infura collects user data in MetaMask

When using Infura as the RPC in MetaMask, ConsenSys will collect IP identifiers and wallet addresses of users, according to the updated privacy policy.

The data is collected in various ways and may include:

• first name, last name, username or similar identifier, customer name, date of birth and gender;
• postal address, email address and phone number;
• username and password, interests, preferences, reviews and survey responses;
• feedback and correspondence;
• financial information;
• payment details and transaction data, such as information about purchases made through ConsenSys services;
• data about product usage;
• marketing information;
• Ethereum wallet address, API-key and network information relating to transactions.

Using a different RPC in MetaMask does not entail collecting the above data.

The company said the decision was driven by a desire to improve its services, as well as to ensure security, fraud protection and regulatory compliance.

With users’ consent, personal data may be disclosed to affiliated entities, professional advisers and service providers to meet legal requirements.     

ConsenSys warned that under certain circumstances the company may deanonymise personal data without further notice. The team uses standard industry security measures and accepts no responsibility for interception, alteration or loss of information.

For safety reasons, developers may suspend use of the services without prior notice pending an investigation if there are suspicions of any security breach.

The community proposed switching from Infura to Alchemy and using Trust Wallet and Rainbow as alternatives to a wallet from ConsenSys.

Uniswap founder Hayden Adams promised to add built-in opt-out for de-identified data collection and said that users can disable such analytics with an ad blocker. 

Hoping to add opt-out of analytics setting soon for people who want to be excluded from tracking of the non-personally identifiable stuff that we use for improving our product (stuff like iOS vs android)

In the meantime, you can do this already with an adblocker..

In November, Uniswap updated its privacy policy.

Developers clarified that this applies to device identifiers, cookies, local storage information, OS data, software languages and browser versions. The procedure does not affect personal information such as first name, last name, postal address, date of birth, email address or IP address.

In March, the MetaMask warned that users in certain jurisdictions may lose access to the app.
