CoinGecko ranks the most popular non-custodial wallets

In 2023, the most popular non-custodial wallet was MetaMask with more than 22.66 million installations. The top 10 apps accounted for 65.9 million new registrations or 81.2%, CoinGecko researchers said.

Trailing MetaMask in popularity are Coinbase Wallet, Trust Wallet and Blockchain.com Wallet. Each of them has at least 10 million installations.

Five non-custodial wallets in the top ten are owned by or affiliated with centralized exchanges. Coinbase Wallet and Crypto.com DeFi Wallet are created by the respective platforms, and Trust Wallet was acquired by Binance in 2018. BitKeep is partially supported by Bitget, and SafePal attracted investment from Binance Labs during integration with Bifinity.

In total, there are at least 55 self-custody crypto-storage apps. Their combined installations total 81.16 million.

By device type, Android mobile devices dominate with 61.6 million downloads. That is three times as many as the browsers Chrome, Brave, Firefox, Opera and Edge.

In July, MetaMask developers updated the interface of the browser extension in the wallet release v10.33.
